I happen to be a merchant and I pay the exact same rate for AMEX as I do for the other networks. That claim that AMEX costs too much to accept is outdated.

But do you get Alum rates?!

Granted that this is going to sound smug but If I could ONLY have AmEx cards?

I'd be a cash customer with zero cards branded AE cards - as I've posted many times I'm not a fan of AE and my oldest open card (dated 1978) is a seldom-used no-AF AmEx card.

EDP (would easly hit the swipes needed for the 50% bonus), SPG Business, Blue Business, and Platinum.  I could easily live with those and I don't run into many issues of not having Amex accepted.  I don't travel internationally all that much so the low acceptance of Amex wouldn't pose as a problem.

AMEX Utopia...
Platinum

SPG Luxury although I would love it if AMEX issued a super-premium Ritz-Carlton card

Re: If you could only have American Express cards?

Im intrigued to grab an amex to round out my profile but i have no *needs* from a card to even app for one..

Probably would get a Cash Magnet and perhaps another banks cobranded Amex if it had decent rewards...

Just not big into travel...

I agree if the merchant looks around there are some super great processor fees out there. We we offered some great deals this year. With that being said we don't take cards as our business is house flipping and real estate brokerage.

Re: If you could only have American Express cards?

If everyone in the US had AMEX, the incentive of AMEX ( a bank and payment network in one ) to provide member perks would not be the same. As it is now, AMEX has about 22% Share, and an interest in growing membership. Other countries, who have less acceptance of AMEX, would be something of a challenge for US travelers.
