If I apply at the register for a card like Macy's or Brooks Brothers, will I be required to provide my employment and annual income information?
Don't know about the employment and income verification, but Macy's did ask me for a major credit card when I app-ed in-store.
Providing an ability to pay is pretty standard for credit apps.

I believe the Macy's one will ask you to click on the screen a "range" for income... that's all
most likely pretty similar at all the store since it's instant credit it's going to pretty much go off your credit rating and that you "say" you have income... they are not going to ask for paystubs like if buying a car if they are concerned!
I'd be more open to department store cards (mainly a Target Card) if they didn't require a hard pull. Whenever they ask me to apply I say "No thanks, I can't afford the credit hit" and just leave it at that.
Chances are they have no idea what a hard pull is and just want to open a card for commission. Then they respond "well we do offer debit cards" as if thats beneficial in any way.
I would tend to think that the only benefit to a department store debit card is eventually getting preapproved for the credit card without a hard pull...and even that is a long shot.

Target and Nordstrom are the only stores I know of that have a debit card and if you like to pay cash but still earn the rewards I guess they are great but I rather have the credit card and places like Macy's almost make it silly to shop at without the store card becuase you are usually loosing 15-20% discount just for not using a macy's store card!!!
15 to 20 percent can come in handy....especially if combined with the friends and family 25 percent off if they are still offering it. Damn HP's though. Do you know what Macy's or Target pulls?
Just saw a Macy's AMEX....hmmmm...
