Is Cap1 QS Capped?

Hello fellow myFICOers,

Been wondering about this, does anyone know whether the Capital One Quicksilver card is capped/tiered at a certain $ amount?

I have had this card since 2015 with a $10,000 SL, and I have religiously requested a CLI every six months, but I keep getting the following response from them - "Your average monthly payment has been too low"

The thing is that I think this is a bogus response from them since the only thing I use this card is for balance transfers, which I tend to keep below 30% utilization. The monthly minimum payment comes out to be $25 and I have always paid between $250 and $500, which is much more than the minimum payment.

Its either that this card is capped or tiered or that they dont make any money from me (swipes, interests).

Has anyone experienced this?

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

I don't think it QS' are capped at $10k as I have seen ppl here with QS' with over $30k limits. It could be that the systems doesn't think your usage of the card warrants a higher limit and or a combination of info from your credit etc.... who knows how the algorithm works.

I do believe that the QS1 are capped at around $3500 to $4k but not the prime QS cards.

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

"Your average monthly payment has been too low" I believe translate into "we want to see faster repayment with larger payments". That is just my take on it.

But to answer your question, yes Cap1 does "bucket" accounts, however, I do not believe yours is in a low bucket category. Your DTI or overall UTI could be the answer.

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

No, it's not capped. My QS(recently pc'd to Savor) started at 5k in the summer of '15. My current limit is $21k, last CLI was in 2017. I've never paid interest on this account. Maybe it's the fact that you only use it for BTs, who knows.

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

OP, they're not capped per se, but upward movement or SLs of years ago have definitely been limited. I was approved for both Venture and QS a few years ago, both @ $50,000 each. I eventually combined them with another card.

What I've also read, trends-wise, for most QS, Venture or even Savor approvals, the highest SLs are typically in the $30,000 range. The old days of $50K SLs out of the gate seem to be a thing of the past.

That being said, I know of an acquaintance who has a $200,000 Venture and I'm sure there's bound to be some Capital One accountholders who likely have higher CLs.

As far as higher CLIs, it appears those have slowed down considerably as well.

Hmmm, I got my QS also in 2015 with $10k SL, and also pretty much just use for for their generous BT offers. And I've also tried for a CLI a couple times for a CLI and got the same exact "Your average monthly payment has been too low" message even though like you I pay much more than the minimum payment on the BT. I think Cap One is just stingy on CLI once you get up to the $10k CL or higher. But while Cap One is stingy on CLIs they love approving new cards, so in Aug. 2016 I decided to app for another QS, expecting a SL of maybe $4-5k or so. Nope, they approved me for $10k again. I got the SUB, enjoyed the 0% intro, then paid it off and combined it with the first QS for a $20k CL, nice little self CLI!

So I suggest you just apply for another Cap One card with an intent to combine it with your QS. QS has a $150 SUB for $500 spend and 15 month intro 0%. Or Savor with for a $500 SUB for $3k spend in 3 months, $95 AF after the first year, but 4% rewards on dining & entertainment. If that spend is too rich the Savor One has the same offer as QS with $150 SUB & 15 months 0%, no AF but 3% on dining/entertainment & 2% groceries. After you do the SUB & 0%, combine it with your QS. I was approved for Savor One a week or so ago with $7k SL. I don't plan to combine it my my QS as $20k CL is plenty and I don't want to risk AA for not pushing massive spend through it to justify a $27k CL, I have better reward cards. I also have a Spark biz card and will just close that when I payoff the BT by next March and keep Savor One.

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

I think that to increase a 10K limit, Capital One may want to see some 4-digit monthly payment totals. Using the card and paying in full would be the easiest way to accomplish this. Balance transfers aren't necessarily conducive to this, although they would certainly help you keep the limit you have.

Re: Is Cap1 QS Capped?

Thanks guys!

From all the vast knowlege this community holds, it seems like Cap1 QS is not bucketed.

In my case, its probably the number of swipes that Cap1 is not happy with since its not making any money from me.

Other than using this card somewhat regularly, I like DaveInAZ's advice, I had done something similar with my Citi card which seems to have worked in the recent past.
