OP, this may be irrelevant to your post but if I may ask, how old was your oldest TL and what was your AAoA when you were approved for the Amex charge card?
My oldest closed TL is a HSBC card from 2005 and my oldest open TL is a student loan from 2006. My AAoA is 2 years.
I don't see any problems with SDing cards. If this is your preference, go for it! Make sure you're using the cards periodically to make sure they don't close. As others have said, if they don't have an AF, might as well. You can close them, but this could potentially hurt your overall Util if you don't have any new TL to supplement the closed cards.

@iCoop wrote:I SD all my cards except for the three main ones I keep in my wallet. Sometimes I put a small charge on the ones in the SD and sometimes I don't. If the bank closes the card it's no hard feelings because I didn't use the card. Kay's just recently closed a card I had with them because I only used it once to purchase a ring.
I have AmEx but they will not increase my CL above $2500 on my Blue Cash card so it's in the SD. I use my Chase IHG ($12.8K CL), CSP ($12K CL), and NFCU CashRewards ($20K CL) on an everyday basis.
Thanks for the info. How long did it take for Kay to close the account? Also, how long have you had your Amex Blue Cash? What are the reasons for their CLI denial if you don't mind me asking. My ED is starting at a low limit (1k) and I'm hoping for the 61 day x3 CLI.
Kays closed my account after 3 years of dormancy. I've had AmEx since 2006, I've had the Blue Cash since 2012. They hav egood reason for denying me based off past behavior but not based on my credit as of the last few years. Back in 2008 I stopped paying on an old account I had with them, it went to 180+ days past due and eventually I got on a payment plan and paid back every single cent. Because of that my internal security score with AmEx is extremely low and because I don't pass that much business through the card they did'nt honor a 61 day request and haven't honored any request since. I use the card from time to time for a sandwich just to keep it open but it collects dust for at least 360 days out of the year.

Ah gotcha. Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
As long as they are clean socks.
This may not be relevant to you, but Kohls store cards will be closed if you do not use theme; they closed mine within less than a year.
For those that have an ez, or I Pass...
One trick I did to keep cards alive was to load $2 onto the transponder with each card low on the totem pole, just to keep some usage there.

Old people are here (like me) that don't do much beyond basic electronics.

well for the older generation, just use it to buy an cup of coffee at starbucks or something like that
I have some cards I opened when I was rebuilding that while there is no AF, the limits are sad, and I likely will close them next year, as I fear they will prevent other issuers from giving me sizable limits.
