I was in a similar situation last year. I had just graduated college and looking to build credit and looked at good rewards cards right off the bat. Bank of American 1-2-3 card and a Citi forward. Denied for both due to lack of credit references or whatever they called it.
So I had to go for a capital one platinum card with a 500 CL. 6 months later I am able to get a discover more and chase united explorer with good limits.
Just go for the capital one cash rewards card on their website, the one for average credit. Keep using it responsibly then once your income improves and you have a stable job by then you will have built up some history and will be able to get prime rewards cards. Your student loans will help as well for a mix of installment and revolving credit. They have certainly helped me.

Is it possible for me to get any decent cards? Or am I going to have to start off small? Any recommendations?
If you successfully removed yourself as an AU, the accounts will NOT update to "closed", they will simply disappear from your credit file.
With no employer, you're going to have a difficult time finding a bank willing to issue a credit card period.
If you can list one of your "off the books" incomes as an employer, that would really help you.
HSBC has a 2% cashback card that isn't too terribly hard to qualify for.
I would try the Capital One preapproval site and see what it shows for you
Thanks for the replies! I couldn't login for some reason until now.
When I wrote rewards I really meant cash back. I kind of grouped them together. I would definitely say I would in now way take advantage of a reward card right now. I do have an "employer" who pays me off the books, and is actually on my resume, so I do have an employer.
Capitol One does not show any cards I am prequalified for.
My Dad, who unfortunately passed away, was a Seebee so I may be qualified for a NFCU card. Do you think that would be my best bet?
The AMEX isn't going to send out the updated information regarding me being removed as an authorized user until the 12th. Should I sign up for the USAA Credit Monitoring service to get my Experian FAKO, or just wait till the AMEX drops off my credit report and then buy a true FICO from here?
I was able to get an Atlantic Stewardship College Rewards Visa as my 1st card. They gave me a $1000 limit. I got 1000 free points on my first purchase and they they have a reward mall to cash out on points or use the points for a statement credit. I've since acquired a discover more college card and love there 5% then + 1% over Atlantic Stewardship's 1% Flat rate bonus on all purchases.
