Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

I have chevron. Which get the cash price at some chevron station, only if station offer cash and credit price. When they do it's normally .10 lower. I also get .30/ per gallon back as statement credit from their promotion. So .40 less a gallon I fill about 4-5 times a week Smiley Sad

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

I guess it depends on how much you spend on gas. I probably spend 100 dollars (if that) and my husband probably spends 130. I live 7 minutes away from my job and he lives about 30 minutes away (he has a hybrid and gets better gas mileage). It wouldn't make sense for us to get a gas card. Now groceries, we probably spend 700 a month on, so a grocery card would make sense.

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

As others said, I think it depends on your personal spend vs the perks that are offered with a particular card. I've been tempted with a few at times, but never pulled the trigger because I just didn't think it made sense for me. But each situation is different.

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

How do you like your Chevron Card? I am looking for a gas card and recently applied for Quik Trip. They said they needed to review further...I am tying to gain another credit line to vary my credit types. Having only 4 cards and a closed auto loan means I need to obtain some variety but what to chose.

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

I decided against one.  Since I have good rewards Visa & M/C's, it just wasn't necessary.  It depends if you feel like keeping track of how much you spend on gas or for business.

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

It's funny back in the dark ages of the mid 80's and early 90's when I was a young driver and new to credit etc....

Ppl in my age group and older are USED TO  gas cards from gas providers...

It's 'part' of what getting credit meant, like a Sears or JCPennys card was ( look it up kidsSmiley Tongue)

Anyway gas cards in todays world are nowhere near as relevant as they once were.

I find it hard to justify having a card tying me to any one place (even store cards) in a world where I can designate a full

card like my USAA AmEx w/ 5% back as my gas only card....

We have so many majors that we need to 'find' usage purpose other than sock warmers...to me I find it tough enough, to have use for

the extra general purp cards with Visa/MC logos I have to ALSO be concerned enough to carry a gas company card.

Plus in a pinch a gen purp can be used anywhere

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

Amex everyday preferred. 3x MR
Or Citi ThankYou Premier 3x TYP

Both of the above are transfer partners to Singapore air which I find valuable and can squeeze out minimum 3 cents per mile. So 9 cents per mile effective rate of earn.
The benefit of citi is that it's for any purchase at gas station and its worldwide (no fx fee either). Amex limits it to purchases at the pump in US gas stations.

With the above said , I mostly buy from Costco. Chase freedom 5x (I get 2.4 to 5 cents per United mile redemption so this is huge) At Costco excluding the pump. The workaround is to buy Costco cash cards online using Freedom and use those at the pump

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

I do want to dedicate one just for fueling expenses and it will be PIF each month. I am looking to increase my score and I don't really need an additional Major Credit Card right now. I recently applied for Chase Freedom Unlimited and received a denial because I just opened a new account with them. So other than picking up a gas card I think I will be gardening awhile.

Re: Is it worth having a gas card?

Gas cards are nice for building or rebuilding but I would not do what I did and get several. After I'm done closing Comenity and rebuilders gas only cards are next. I'll keep 2-3 but be selective. Some now offer you rebates with no minimum spend and if you're in an area where there is a cash vs credit price, the gas brand card will often get you the cash price. Shell, Citigo, Sunoco and I think Exxon/Mobile are .05 per gallon with no minimum. Not bad
