Re: Is the SPG Luxury worth the wait?

Well let's see, folks -

-$300 in credits towards Marriott brand purchases every year.

-$100 global entry credit every five years.

- Priority Pass plus two guests.

-Annual free night award (worth at least $100).

-Boingo wifi access

I would use 0.08 cpp as a reference to Marriott value, but it could be more or less depending on the hotel. You're looking at about $1,000 using that as a reference point (for the 125,000 bonus).

“at least $100” is quite an understatement! Smiley Tongue Even using your low valuation, that’s $400. I think it would be quite difficult to get much less value than $350 or so.

I would also add that IMHO the card is worth getting for the SUB and then dumping. AX plat and Aspire are better products.

The problem I see is one free night isn't very useful.  I get 50k night is better than 35k night but as I have 4 cards that will give me a 35k night that is actually a 5 night stay at 35k hotel for 480 dollars.  Its not like I am going to pay for a 50k night Marriott on my own dime.  I think this card is a good card to get for the sign-up bonus.  Not sure if it is worth keeping if you don't value the Priority Pass or you have Lounge access on another card.

I know you clarified this with "IMHO," but that's a really broad statement.  SPG or SPG Luxury may not make sense for you (I see that you have a few other hotel branded cards), but for those that are somewhat regular Starriott-Carlton users, I see the card as essential.  Aspire vs SPG Luxury certainly both have their merits, but for those of us who see little value in Hilton Diamond status (or the HHonors program as a whole, not to mention a complete lack of any physical properties in many areas), the Aspire is useless as a Marriott loyalist.  Platinum is a better product for its indended uses, sure, but using it to pay for hotel stays when you are in a loyalty program for any of the major hotel chains is a waste.

I know this may not be the correct section to ask in--but since SPG cards and bonuses are the curret subject of this topic I'll ask anyway: Does the business version with the 100k pt $5k/3 mo. SUB and only $95 fee seem to better a better deal than this luxury card? I'm eyeballing this card (biz version) for about 2.5 mos down the road.

Re: Is the SPG Luxury worth the wait?

I'll need to think hard about this card. I'm supposed to drop under 5/24 in Feb and this would push me back. I don't see the value in keeping the card beyond the first year given my other products.

Differences:

  • Luxury earns 3x for restaurants and flights, Biz earns 4x for restaurants, gas, wireless and shipping.
  • 35k night vs 50k night can be a huge difference if you use it right.
  • Biz comes with Silver Elite, $30k ($35k 2019 onward) spend for Gold Elite.  Luxury comes with Gold Elite, $75k spend for Platinum Elite.
  • Luxury has $300 in annual statement credits, $100 TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit, and Priority Pass.  Biz has none.

Biz is a better earner for a lot of people, and some perks of the Luxury card will be redundant for those with other premium cards.  Otherwise, if you were going to stay in Marriott properties a few times in 2019 anyway, I think the higher AF of the Luxury is a moot point.

Re: Is the SPG Luxury worth the wait?

Actually...now that I think about it, I had the regular Amex SPG back in 2015, before they redesigned the card but closed it probably a year or just over a year after. Does that make me ineligble for the SPG Luxury SUB?

Nothing about the SPG card would prevent you from receiving a bonus for SPG Luxury (unless Amex decides that you are just completely ineligible for bonuses entirely due to the number of cards opened and closed, in which case they will warn you during the application process).  The only things that would prevent from receiving the bonus would be:

  • You have (or have had in the past 30 days) the Ritz-Carlton card.
  • You've acquired Premier, Premier Plus, or Premier Business from Chase in the past 90 days (or received a bonus or upgrade offer from one of those three cards in the past 24 months).
