Is there any action I can take to fix this?!

It all started almost a year ago when Amazon.com and Chase baited me into getting a credit card with some money off my purchase. I planned to get it and pay then forget about it. Anyways, the balance after the discount was ~$30 for the text book I bought from Amazon. Then zoom to 60 or so days latter, I decided to check on my credit report just to check my progress. My score had been ~720 a few months earlier, but to my astonishment it was in the LOW 600s! Thats when i noticed that that stupid $30 balance had morphed into a $100 balance! First thing I did was pay that ridiculous balance, then I asked Chase to fix the problem. They wouldn't budge. Saying that they need to uphold the integrity of the credit bureaus? This is crap. I routinely pay large payments(1000 or more) every month and i am NEVER late on those. I have NEVER even let a balance carry over on a card ever, why on earth would I knowingly screw myself by choosing to not pay $30?! Basically, all i am saying here Is the fact that i was delinquent on $30 that I didn't even know about and paid in full as soon as it was noticed should not screw me out of getting a good mortage rate.

How did you not know about it?  Did you get any statements?

Well, the damage has been done. I would GW them until they got sick and tired of me. Eventually, your GW letter will be read by a sympathetic csr and they'll delete it.

I've been a Chase customer for 30 years - since they were Chemical Bank - and have always found them helpful and accommodating.

I never saw any statements, but when I sent a letter to chase they said that they had sent them and sent copies of them to me. I am guessing that there was some sort of mix up with my e-mail spam filter, as i was enrolled in electronic only statement.

Yes, keep GW'ing them until they relent.

You might need to tell them that you're "upholding the integrity" of your wallet and bank account by canceling their card unless they remove the lates.

However, you might need a few months to live this down first.

I understand your frustration but Chase really do not care about how much you pay to other CCC's. I think you have to catch a bee with honey and not vinegar. At the end of the day you have a bad mark on your credit report for something that you forgot, and they only want their money.

I would call and explain to them how it totally slipped your mind, as you are very responsible and had the scores to prove it when you app'd the card, and you are really sorry about this. Also, explain to them how s soon as you realized what happened you took care of it immediately. They will not be willing to work with you if you call them being sarcastic and all of the other stuff.

Just remember at the end of the day the goal s to try and get those bad marks removed, so be nice.

Well, as far as canceling it.... I did that months ago, when I began my vendetta against chase. Yes, I know all they care about is money, but from my corner over here, they already took their piece when I ultimately paid 106 dollars for a 30 dollar balance. The calmer nicer approach is already in the works. I sent a sincere, non-threatening, non-sarcastic letter today. I guess we will see what happens. One more thing, have people had better luck with letters or phone calls? I tend to think I can be more tactful when I write a letter and am not getting pissed at the automaton on the other end of the line

A few people have had luck with phone calls, but it's generally better to go with letters and e-mails. The CSR's that you get on the phone are trained that it is illegal, etc, to remove lates, and they sincerely believe this.

FWIW, I app'd at checkout at Sears 13 months ago. I thought that I got a store card. I shredded what looked like ads for MasterCard until I realize that they were statements for my new MC. (I never bothered to open the envelope when they mailed me the card.) Lost 50 points overnight in March, and now I'm grimly waiting for it to go over 12 months, along with the GW's.

It's nobody's fault but my own. Every now and then I vaguely wondered when Sears would get around to sending me a statement. I now know exactly how much I owe to whom. A bitter and expensive lesson, but a very effective one.
