Is there any harm in trying for a cap1 CLI and being denied?

So I got the dreaded 2-3 days message, I'm assuming it's a denial. I was just wondering is there any harm done here since I was denied a CLI from capital one?  I know trying is a soft pull correct?  Does it ruin your internal scores or chances with cap1 since you're denied?  And does emailing or calling the EO still work? I guess being denied got me paranoid if there's any down side or harm that was done for even trying.

I'very never gotten any harm from a Cap1 CLI denial, but this was the pre-credit steps CLI so if it's a regular CLI it might be different.

If you apply for a CLI for one of Capital One's own cards (i.e. Platinum, Quicksilver, Venture) they only do a soft pull.   Note that if you apply for a new Capital One card, they could do a hard pull.

If you apply for a CLI for one of the store-branded cards, they MAY do a hard pull.  I know this because it happened for myUnionPlus card.

Re: Is there any harm in trying for a cap1 CLI and being denied?

I have not found any issue with trying for a CLI and getting denied. I tried every couple of weeks for the first 4.5 months that I had my Platinum--->QS (started at $500 limit) and I went to $5000 at the 4.5 month mark and then with credit steps to $5500. Then my other plat-->QS (also started at $500 limit) went to $1500 at the 3 month mark and then to $2500 with credit steps. And I pressed the CLI button every couple of weeks with that one too. I then did an account combination after 6 months on my second Plat-->QS. So I think the denials didn't hurt me at all even though I got a bunch of them initially.

Re: Is there any harm in trying for a cap1 CLI and being denied?

They're soft pulls so it shouldn't matter.  When they put the document in your Statements & Documents section of your account they'll tell you why they denied it and a list of common denial reasons so you'll know things like how long to wait until you try again (heh).

Their timeline is usually at least 3 months after account opening and 6 months between CLIs (unless you get one before a Credit Steps increase -- a requested CLI doesn't affect Credit Steps in any way).  I opened my QS1 in December of last year, got a small bump in February, and got Credit Steps in June so December is when I can try for my next one.
