I meant to post this a few weeks ago.
I have a Cap 1 Plat that they offered me last summer at the $300. They sent me the credit steps letter: Use the card, pay on time for three months and we'll bump it to $500. So I did that and got the $500. I called and asked what the next "step" might be. They told me that was it, there are no more steps! So I've used it occasionally, max to $103 I think, and PIF the same month.
After the AMEX Gold and BJ's Visa successes I called Cap 1 for an increase.
The standard number after lots of button pushing gave me an automated, "We cannot grant an increase at this time." Grrr
So then I got the backdoor number here and called again. I got an answer on the first ring, the guy was in Canada, and was extremely nice. Then he did his thing, and said I was not eligible for an increase, but he would give me one if he could.
I told him that the Cap 1 website said I was eligible for several different cards. How could I be eligible for better cards, but not get an increase on this one. He then told me that Cap 1 allows up to five cards!
It seems that the limited credit card has a "glass ceiling", but one can go get the better cards with current status. So, maybe the strategy is to go get a better card when one's status improves, then combine the old one with the new one.
BTW, I got two letters about a week later explaining the increase denials. Guess both calls generated a denial letter.
