You sort of cut your nose to spite your face in this instance. Out of irritation.
Credit is a game where you have to have a sort of detachment about things.
I'm fine with it. I use my cards as business tools, so I cut them loose if they don't work for me. No attachment.
I'd asked them if they could see my BBY spending for last year and this year, and they said yes. So, they knew that I'd spent a few hundred K with them and that a $1k limit was useless for my purposes. I've been getting 4.5x back using my AR at BBY, but there are going to be changes to that and I wanted to prepare for it. I figured it was about time I'd switch and get 6% in rewards using the BBY card, but the limit wasn't going to work.
Or maybe that was exactly the issue. Perhaps they didn't want to pay me the initial 10% back on the $20k purchase I was about to make. They figured I'd be ok with $1k and only get $100 in rewards, and eventually I'd ask for more. Nah... that sounds like a conspiracy theory
I think you're on to something. Someone's pocket will take a hit with massive spending w/10% discount on all of it.

Maybe @magixnite can clarify if the closure was voluntary 👍😁
Woah, I just woke up and didn't expect so many replies! Anyway, I voluntarily closed it...sorry should have been more clear on that.
The original plan was to finance a TV on it, but my family took a different route with that purchase. And I couldn't think of any other reason to keep it. My mixed emotions came from really justifying to keep it open. I haven't yet to regret closing it. Also, HP hits don't really matter too much to me (at the moment).
Also, I think there is some confusion I never asked for an increase in credit... I was fine with my $2k limit.
I think that was another poster stating his experience.

I occasionally shop at Best Buy. I tend to use the Costco Visa for electronics, though (extended warranty). Sometimes Amex if they have some nice rewards/financing promo.
Your Freedom is just $500 and also a month old. Do you plan to get rid of that, too?
I read it as OP closed the card after a month rather than Citi closing it, based on the "mixed emotions" statement. If OP would clarify that it would help.
@Anonymous
To rephrase,
The fact that OP has been seeking credit aggressively may explain part of why Citi gave an unsatisfactory SL...the other part being a generally short history.
tldr most of the last few pages.
Thanks for the clarification @magixnite.
If you changed your mind or things changed after the fact it's perfectly ok. In the grand scheme of things, no major impact other than a potential slight hit on scoring for the HP and the new account, but it's likely to remain in your CRs for up to ~10 years.
But, as you've shared, if you are ok with it then folks just need to accept it. Everyone follows a different path on their credit journey regardless of how unconventional it may be for other individuals.
Like as I said in my thread citi is useless, asking for an hp for a cli is rediculous no matter who the lender is imo, they do ar pulls which tell them your other credit lines activity etc, everything is always nondescript stupid reasons, in my year of card building I have been on literally every lender has given me cli, including disco double dip the other day and I've only had that since November 17th with minimal spend on it, and Citi is the only one that wants to do hard pulls for any increase I have burned three tu inquiries, 1 at 6 months one at 9 months and one at the urging of the csr in between will not budge period after 2nd navy card they will be getting sd

If you think lenders who pull HPs for CLIs are ridiculous, I think you're in for quite a rude awakening as plenty of them do it. Technically speaking, all of them should be doing it. Credit inquiries leave a mark that lets other companies know you are seeking credit and that's not just limited to new credit. It's great that so many banks and CUs don't do HPs but where it helps the consumer, it makes lending more risky for everyone since limits aren't updated in real-time. When you ask a lender for a CLI, they have no way of knowing you just got SP CLIs from 4 other lenders, something that would make you seem like a higher risk.
I can agree with this^^^^ that they don't want people going around Willy nilly getting in over their head getting cli all over the place, it's not that they do hps it's the inconsistency some cards do it some don't blah blah blah, I'm sure lots of sp clis have led to a lot of AA just not impressed with Citi lol

So how would other lenders distinguish between a sp cli request and an auto cli (for good behavior)? I don't see where that's plausible and it would concern me that AA would come from a consumer reaping the benefits of impeccable payment history, trust, and overall being a valuable consumer to other Banks.

Don't get me wrong, Citi makes me grumpy too. They gave me a card but auto decline CLIs because I have a BK and it irks me that they leave SP language there if it's always no. But like for example NFCU used to cost a HP to get a CLI. If I had felt that HPs were ridiculous, I wouldn't have $17K in limits on $18K income there. If it wasn't for NFCU, I actually have doubts about whether I would have had the success I have had with other lenders since they were the first to break into 5 digits for me. Sometimes those HPs are totally worth it and from what I have seen, Citi seems to make those HPs worthwhile too as long as your profile supports what you want. It seems Citi isn't a fan of your profile right now.
