Re: Looks like I need a Visa, but which one?

Lol @Hex . Sorry, that was not my intent. If Penfed works for ypu or snyone needing a Visa thats good. I just wanted the Op to realize there was hope on getting a Costco card from Citi as 8 years is long enough to try. Were it Amex or Chase id probably hold off a bit even though with Amex, if you didnt burn them, its usually 5 years or so before they will consider youSmiley Wink

The Amex info was accurate.  I saw the pre-quals pop up just after the 6 year mark, although I never looked until then.  Really helpful bunch, here!  Time to check the approval forum and gather more DP!

I was hoping you would know your FICO 9’s because that’s what PenFed uses and they issue great Visa cards. I think most people can greatly benefit from a relationship with a good credit Union. PenFed has been GREAT to me and I have a BK 7 that was discharged in July of 2016. The first card they gave me was in July 2017. They also approved me for a car loan last June at 1.99%. If you have any current or former military people in your family you might qualify for Navy Federal Credit Union. Navy seems to be easier to get credit from then PenFed. You can join PenFed by making a $17 donation to one of their charities and you don’t need any family connections to get in. PenFed is known for having some of the lowest car loan rates in the country. I don’t know what your car loan rate is, but if it’s high, and you’re thinking of a refi you might consider joining PenFed and applying for a credit card and a refi at the same time. Just joining PenFed results in a EQ hard pull but you could use the same one to apply for a credit card and an auto refi. PenFed tends to be sensitive to new accounts and you do have some but not a ton. People on this forum do complain about PenFed being conservative but I don’t think they’re that bad. I think you have a better than fifty percent chance of credit card approval from them if you want to risk an EQ pull. Just something to think about. Good luck!

PenFed gave me a single HP on EQ to cover membership and card earlier this year. That could be OP's best shot. They are my lowest limit though, which was discussed in my approval thread: https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Approvals/PenFed-Pathfinder-Approved/td-p/5509644.

Re: Looks like I need a Visa, but which one?

I probably wouldn't apply for a card just for the sake of Costco unless you know you will be shopping there repeatedly. There are other options, pay with debit, cash, buy Costco GCs on their website, etc. Not to say it's bad to apply for any of the various Visa products out there, but there's no rush for this purpose IMO.

Penfed is pretty conservative and you could be looking at a low limit approval which isn't all that helpful. I would just garden and utilize a non-credit option for Costco temporarily as your options will open up more down the road.

I'm a newbie, so I should wait a while before leaving messages, but CreditOne had an easy approval process even though the CL they gave me was low: $2.3K.  Good Luck!!

Welcome to the forums! It's great to see new faces posting! I'm not sure how much you've read around here, but Credit One is generally regarded in the same way one regards the Devil. Mainly due to their myriads of high fees, they're generally only recommended to a small group of rebuilders, and even at that, only to have open for a short time until scores improve. You'll find numerous threads of people rejoicing over closing their Credit One cards.

Re: Looks like I need a Visa, but which one?

Coscto is of course Citibank, and its a legacy card of theirs. Citibank has two sides, retail and legacy for cards.

Citibank will entertain someone with a BK after 4+ years, no INQ in the last 6 months, and minimal new acts for 12 months.

You being 8 yrs post BK, you're in their target range. Scores are "ok" for approval, just make sure everything else looks good....no inq for 6 months, 1-2 new accts max for the year, low overall utilization <9%, and at least 2 years of credit history showing post BK.

If you have a Coscto close by, go in store that way verification is quick. Make sure EQ and EX are open. Good luck if you try!!
