Many thanks to all who have offered input! All things considered, I think I'm gonna go the Venture&QS route. I really need a card with travel awards with no forex fees, so the venture should suit me for now. Then back to the garden I go until I can meet the 5/24 requirement by Chase. Thanks again!

Sounds like a good plan.

If you want to get the Cash+, you should go to a US Bank branch to apply. They are somewhat difficult to get started with, particularly with the Cash+ first, but if they deny the Cash+, they may give you the CashRewards or another card. You can then work that with some spend while you garden. My CashRewards card (was something else when I first got it in 2009) I just PC'd to be my second Cash+ card this month, and that is because when the CSR checked, my CashRewards had already been tagged in the system as eligible to upgrade to Cash+. So PC'ing from something else up to the Cash+ is a realistic pathway.
