I just opened one last month and need some advice...

1) How many payments should I make before I request a CLI?

2) Can the card eventually upgrade to the American Express or is it forever a Store Card?

Unless something has changed I think you request CLI's at minimum of every 4 months. Yes the card will be upgraded to the Amex over time with use and great payment history.  

When I opened my account, I got the Amex with a $1k limit. A couple of years later, it's now $5500.

Use it wisely. It will grow.

I was able to ask for a CLI every 31 days. 

I'd usually buy something from Macy's every 2 or 3 months.

The limit is 25k for easy online CLIs. After 25k, you'll have to call and a someone needs to evaluate your account before approving the increase.

Regarding upgrades, AFAIK it's up to them to decide if and when they'll upgrade your account. I called multiple times and they told me they can't do it manually and I'll have to wait for an invitation.

@Charmante  .. I think My first CLI was at either 60 or 90 days (too many cards, can't remember)

CLI's are "SP" and you can ask on the website.

My first card was a store card, applied and was approved for the Amex/Macy's Card.

So I now have two cards. I did not want to wait for the upgrade.

It took time for me to get the sp cli because at first id get hp, even got one for a $600 increase lol.  With being a new account im not sure on timing of cli requests but i do know there was the 31 day window when i was requesting them. Card can grow easy with little usage  . Upgrades  possible but dont count on it right now though it could change.

After reading this thread no more than 2 minutes ago I submitted for a Macy's CLI.

Requested an increase from $9900 to $24,900. I didn't get the $24,900 but they counter offered with 15,900 so I was more than happy to accept a 6k increase. This is for the store card and not the AMEX card. My last CLI I believe was about 3 months ago from $3900 to $9900 so its increments of 6,000.

Haven't upgraded the AMEX side of the card but I can do that once I hit 25k on the store.

My Macy's store card has been sitting at 25K for quite sometime. I have never been offered the upgrade 😞

Sorry @Jnbmom , I guess this was the reason I did not want to wait.

Guess I will have to see if they will let me reach $25K on each card?

It was in his siggy that I had seen two Macy's cards .. as I did not know that was even possible!
