At what CL will Macy's allow you to change from their store card to their Visa card?
Do they often do it automatically or give pre-approvals?
When I was in Macy and my wife force me to get a store card I applied in person and from looking at my cr I see that my store limit was 1200 cl. Though the card that they sent me was a macy's visa with a 6k limit. It could be that you have to reach a certain fico score which I don't know the min.
For what it's worth - I've had a Macy's card for about 7 years... Don't use it very often, but have received a couple of small CLIs and it's now at 5k. They have never offered to upgrade it nor have I ever requested it be upgraded. But by my experience if you want the Visa, I wouldn't sit around and wait for them to send you one. Call and politely request - you may be surprised.
Good luck.
edited for spelling.

You will get an invitation to upgrade in the mail if your EX report looks good to them. Macy's looks at that report every three months, and this might result in the upgrade offer. If you get the offer, it's already approved. The offer is unrelated to your instore spending.
I received an invitation to upgrade in the mail today. I'm not sure if I'm going to upgrade the card. I assume the upgrade will result in a hard pull.
Is the upgraded Visa account treated as a new one or does it pick up the same account age of the store card?

It will be a completely new tradeline. You will keep your store card account with its age and get a new visa account with a new opening date in addition to that. Everything you buy at Macy's will count against your store card account, everything else against your new visa account. If the Visa is offered by Macy's, it will not be a hard pull. They have already looked at your Experian report and decided that you will get it, if you want.
Edit: Note that both accounts will be on one card! Make sure you pay both bills.
Are you sure about this - know from experience? I realize if customer initiated it results in a hard pull, but I thought I saw where others posted and still received the pull even though invited to apply. Just want to be sure before I make my move
I don't trust what reps tell me anymore. Rely on personal experiences.
