Hey all, I'm a newb on the board but not to credit building. I'm up from the 520's in summer 2012 after a very rough period of 90+% util, a 60-day on my Wells Fargo car note, and a 90-day on a personal loan. No delinquencies in more than 18 months and down to 35% util. Full disclosure: I work at a CCC. As a supervisor. So... *waves* ...we may have chatted in the past. Probably about your CLI decline.
I'm so sorry.
Anywho, I pulled my reports again recently after resolving a dispute with EX (removing an erroneous collection, should cause my EX score to go up a bit, collection was 2 years old and not reported to the other CBs).
My first CC, Macy's store card, is reporting as open and in good standing. It was opened in 2007 at $100 CL. I haven't even thought about this card since 2009 or so, but since it's my first one, I figure I could request a new card and maybe spend a little every month for awhile and then get a CLI. Again, with working at a CCC, I've reopened accts that were inactive since 2006-7, it does take a special request through the system, but it can be done. I didn't anticipate to go through a lot of trouble.
Had horrible customer service from Nick, a US-based specialist I was transferred to when the supplier site agent couldn't help. He argued with me and said just open another account, you don't get a shopping discount from reactivating, we have to go through the same process to reactivate the card that we do to open a new one, so just open a new one. After a few minutes I finally got him to understand I didn't want another new card. So he agrees to help. I ask him what he meant by he needs the same information to reopen it that he does to open a new one. A HP on my credit? "I don't know what kind of pull, I just put it in the system and the system pulls what it needs to." Uhhh... sorry, not good enough. Do you use my social security number and pull a new credit score to determine if it can be reopened? "The system will pull what it needs to pull, I have no way of knowing." All right, Nick, could you find out from your help system or a floor sup if they know? "Well, fine, the system will warn me if it's going to pull anything so I can let you know and cancel out." Ughhhh but I agree and we proceed with income and employment info. Nick said he pressed the button and it popped up "the account has been inactive more than 36 months, ask the customer if they would prefer to apply for a new card." I said no, and he submitted it, and it said, "The account has been inactive more than 36 months, tell the customer to apply for a new card." Soooooo, a little redundant there. What a colossal waste of the last 10 minutes. He then went on another 5 minute spiel about the system this and the system that and how he wishes he could do more but the system this'n'that. At my company that's called "disassociation" meaning you separate yourself from the company as if to say Hey, if it were up to me, I'd do it in a heartbeat but man, sorry, the company's really busting my balls on this one. It's a good way to fail a call. Policies can suck sometimes, but jeez, stand behind your company instead of being a coward. Just gross. Really bad service.
Sorry for the digression.
I am really disappointed. I want this account to stay open so my AAOA (which currently sucks at 3 years 3 months) will continue to benefit. Part of me thinks if they haven't closed it in 5 years they probably won't ever close it, but the other part of me still wants it reopened, active, and eventually getting a CLI.
I can't tell from teh guugglz whether Macy's financing is done in-house or by Citi. Does anyone have any experience with this card and trying to escalate an issue? I would love to get this resolved.
I have a Macy's AmEx, and I can't count the number of times I have said to my DH, "Macy's shouldn't be allowed to operate a credit card."
I am on my 3rd card. The 1st two had to be closed due to fraudulent transactions. The frustrating part is that I don't use the card other than once every 3 months to keep it showing activity...and I've never used it online. Yet, it's getting hacked somehow. The last fraud took call after call to resolve, even though they recognized it as fraud in my very first call. Their pen, paper, and snailmail fraud system is decades old. I kept being told that it wasn't getting resolved due to "work load." I don't wonder...they must have stacks and stacks of paper.
I wouldn't put a lot of faith in getting anything resolved at Macy's.
@Jazzzy, that blows. Thanks for the heads up, though! I guess I will count on their goodwill to keep it open for the next few years...

Hey, I hope this info helps. Macy's was like my first credit card and I made all my payments on time until I lost my job. Anyway went to collections, co, and then paid. Macy's reopened my account. Checked my 3 crs today and my account was not back dated as they stated. You can try contacting corporate, and maybe they can reactivate this account for you.
Also, look up the back door number and go that way.
Amex is the only card that will D*, seems quite unlikely that Macy's will reopen an account closed years ago, as a sup at a ccc would imagine this would not come as a surprise.

Hi there, thanks for the help. The account is OPEN. It reports to all CRAs as open and in good standing.
An open account is "reactivated" by usage, so this thread is essentially: 'Macys declined to send a new card on a dormant account reporting as open'
Can try your luck speaking to another rep to request that a new card is issued for the lost one-leave it at that as far as what you say-are calling to request a new card and to find out what has to be done to receive a replacement for a lost card. End of story (steer clear of using or repeating the terms new account/reactivate/etc if they are used by the rep). Perhaps can break through the 36 month restriction indicated if you have some luck with the csr you reach the second or third time around.
This type of call kinda has to be handled delicately and ideally will be relatively short and sweet. It is not incumbent upon them to move to act in the way a card holder asks on a dormant account; it's by luck that it isn't reporting as closed (hopefully this will still report as open after the initial failed attempt, which apparently got a bit too drawn out).
It is unrealistic to expect a csr to be able to give accurate information about HP vs SP, the last thing you want to do is be led into an argumentative posture when requesting a new card reissue on a dormant account (that for some reason is not reporting as closed but was probably intended to be by the issuer after all these years of nonuse). One way to avoid HP is to freeze reports prior making a request that you think may result in a stray hard.
Thanks everyone for the update... I consider myself extremely credit savvy, but I actually had NO idea that a closed acct will continue to impact your AAOA for 10 years. I learned this in another area of the board. AWESOME NEWS!!!
Well, I have a Citi card I opened a year after Macy's... in 10 years it will have been open 16 years and I don't think Macy's falling off will affect me that much. So, with a $100 CL (will barely touch my util) and reactivation declined unless I follow the steps outlined by @score_building, which I'm not keen to do... looks like I will be calling tomorrow to close the account!
YOU WIN THIS TIME, Nick! You still gave me crappy service though!
