Macy's did a Hard Inquiry on EX for verification without my permission

Two days ago, i was doing some shopping at a Macys store but when i was checking out my Macys card needed additional verification so the Sales Representative started calling their credit department but i told her that i didn't have much time and i can use another card and yeah thats what i did (i didn't get the discounts thou).

When i was back home i decided to call their regular costumer service number (1-866-593-2543) to see what's up with my account so i told the CSR about the issue, he said my account had a hold and needed to transfer me with the Fraud Department for additional information so once i was transfered to that department they said my account had a hold because i did some changes to my info online (you guys know how Macys doesn't trust their online services) and in order for them to release it they needed to ask me some questions about public records i was put on hold and the CSR came back saying that the computer program wasn't working properly and for that reason they were going to ask me some questions about my Credit Report i said sure why not.... and then they asked who was my employer and to name a credit card and the limit... I answered everything correctly so the CSR told me my account was good to go and was able to do purchases from now on I said Cool thanks.....

Here's the awful part the Fraud Department person DID a HARD INQUIRY ON EXPERIAN, just to verify information about my credit report...I found that this morning and Credit Sesame also informed me a new inquiry from DSNB/Macys was added on my report so i was like WTH!!!

I decided to call to the backdoor number i found on this forum (1-800-627-2909) someone picked up the phone right away and explained the situation. He said there was in fact a new Hard Inquiry placed on my Exp report on 03/08/14 he said he was going to put me on hold to find out what's going on.. He came back telling me he was going to send a request to Experian to remove the Hard Inquiry in 7-10 business days and was also going to receive a letter informing me about that.

Also, Chase Card Services and AMEX soft pulled me because of that new hard inquiry. I hope i don't get in trouble with them

They are allowed to do this.  As one of your creditors, they have permissible purpose.  However, I'm glad to hear that they are taking care of you and removing the inquiry.

I know but at least they should've told me they needed to see my credit report for verification purposes so i would've been aware of it.. Every creditor i have ask me if it's ok for me to allow them see my CR when requesting a CLI or something like that.....plus my other creditors will assume i'm seeking more credit from Macys when they see the new inquiry...

Re: Macy's did a Hard Inquiry on EX for verification without my permission

I think it's just too bad that they essentially tricked you into giving them the information for a pull. All of those questions sound like the pre-verification ones when you try to access a report. I wonder if it's possible that they meant to do a SP and an employee screwed up. But I'm glad they're fixing it for you. Even if it's technically their right to pull, you'd think they would do you the courtesy of asking ahead of time, or at least informing you!

Have you recently opened cards with Chase and Amex that you're worried about the attention?

Yeah i opened three chase cards in the past 12 months (i closed one of them and transfered the CL to Chase Freedom) the most recent one is the CSP which only has 4 months and then i opened an AMEX gold last Jan I kinda freaked out when i saw the new inqury and some posters here at my Fico are reporting Chase is shutting down their cards for many new accounts and inquiries

How are they supposed to ask you questions about what's on the report if they don't look at it? As someone else said, they don't need your permission to pull a report and the other creditors do not need your permission either. Chase and American Express both used to look at Experian everytime I had a new inquiry. After a while, Chase stopped, but American Express still feels the need to do it. Nothing has ever happened as a result of the account reviews.

One, yes, but as of now we're still waiting to find out why the other's were suspended. Chin up. If you've read through either thread you should have seen people's concerns and the community's responses to whether they have anything to worry about. Definitely keep an eye on your accounts in the meantime, and if you're truly worried you can call Chase to explain and check on things, but I'd mostly be counting the days until the HP is removed to make sure Macy's doesn't botch that as well. I highly doubt one additional inquiry would ruin everything for you, but even if there's any AA like CLDs you should be able to get it reversed by explaining that the offending inquiry was done without your knowledge and proving it's not longer on your report.

They still can see my CR without doing a Hard inquiry and the way is by doing a SOFT PULL and i know that because Chase did a verification on me by requesting an Experian Credit Report via SP. They kinda asked me the same questions as Macys did and after i was done with that i went to see my EXP report and could see the Chase Card sevices SP and not a HP. So i didn't see the need of HP my EXP report for that. Sure my Current Creditors can HP at any moment but i mean they should at least tell you about that as a courtesy...plus as i said before all my creditors do ask me for permission to see my credit reports when im requesting a CLI or something like that
