If you have the store/CC combo, CLIs are hard.

No!

I have had Macy's Visa since 2008. Store Card $1000, Visa $2000.

Day card was opened charged $1000, made a payment and then charged another $1500... they gave a temporary CLI to allow the charge.

3 month mark CLI store to I believe $2000 or $3000 and CLI Visa to $5000 = NO HARD

6 month mark CLI store to $10,000 (I asked for $7500 and she came back and said computer said $10k if you want it) Visa I think I went to 10k. NO HARD

Opened furniture line of $3600 = NO PULL

between 9-12 months CLI Store to $10,700 and an auto CLI Visa to $12k

Fast forward almost 2 years:

Opened another furniture line for $5800, charged another $2500 on Store that wouldn't fit on furniture line and Visa now Amex was almost maxed out 12k = NO HARD

6 months or so asked for a reduced interest/payment plan on Amex so it was closed but they did not close store card or furniture card and left CL intact.

2 months go by and came into some money so completely paid store, furniture and amex.

Asked to re-open Amex (this was a hard) they opened at $500 (clearly far from the 12k I had but considering!)

last month hit 3 months on Amex and CLI to $2k = NO HARD

Every rep I have ever spoke to says CLI are soft, furniture lines MAY be hard but never have been for me.

They have been very good to me despite me making some errors

All I know is that I got a hard when I asked for a CLI.

Me too!  I have two hard pulls currently showing up on my CR's from Macy's CLI's on the store card.  That was back in the day when they reported CL's, and I was intent on growing the card.

Re: Macys

Just out of curiosity, what kind of credit lines do they offer to people with good credit?  We are furnishing a large 5 bedroom house and buying tons of things.  Every time we go they really try to sell getting the card.  I get miles and points with my AMEX card so I almost never sign up for store cards.  Plus I heard all of these places have really low credit limits, even for people with high credit scores.

Anyone out there get a high credit limit with Macy's?  It doesn't make sense for me to get a store credit card if the credit limit will be super low.  For example, I recently applied for a Best Buy credit card as I was buying several things for the house and the credit limit was super low.  And my FiCO score with all the bureaus is over 800.   Plus my annual income is very high.  It wasn't even worth it to me to open the card.

We almost gave in as we could have saved 15% on the purchase by opening a card.  But we were buying several thousands of dollars worth of things and from what I heard the limits are low.

We pay off our balances each month so not worried about APR.  Thanks in advance.

Couple things here:

If you are taking advantage of the 15% off for opening a card then that means you would be putting the furniture on a Macy's Store Charge that would be at 24.50% if you did not pay in full, which if you have the cash and just looking for rewards then this would be the way to go!!

If you are looking for financing then you would have to open a furniture line, they use to give out $3600 pretty freely, it was once I had my original furniture line down to maybe $600-800 that I went back for another one and they gave $5800 I believe it was and I needed $6200 which I put the rest on my Amex and then when I went back and spent another $2500 I just put it on my store card.

The advantage of store card for furniture if you can pay in full is... if it's a new account as you stated you would get the 15%, in addition you would get reward certificates for the purchases which could be pretty lucritive also AND you would instantly make your new "Red" Macy's and "Ultimiate Premier Black Card Macy's"

and one last thought, if you just want store card for the 15% and never really use again, then make sure if you apply you check "ONLY CONSIDER ME FOR STORE CARD" because if you have good credit you are very likely to get approved for a Macy's Amex, which would give you:

1 Macys Store Card Charge account

1 Macy's American Express account with a seperate credit line

1 Macy's specialty account for like Jewelry and stuff like that (believe they call it a club account)

yes that's right 3 NEW tradelines on your credit report.

I actually have 5 Tradelines from Macy's on my credit, store, amex, club, original furniture, and second furniture line.

and yes with good credit you could probably get several thousand... might take a call and a little conversation with a credit person but I don't see why they wouldn't allow the charge.

Re: Macys

Might just be time to see about increasing the $10,700 Store limit I have since I stopped asking when it went away from credit report.

Are store CLIs hard or soft? I know the CC CLIs are hard.

That's not true... It is always suppose to be a soft... I have only seen hard pull 1 and that was after I went into reduced interest plan on the (at the time Visa)... when I paid it off early I asked for the (now amex) to be opened again.... They did hard pull and opened it again with much lower limit! However I have already had 1 increase on that and I have also done 2 furniture lines over the last 4 years and no pulls for that either.

I know that got a HP on the Visa (before it was converted to Amex) in July 2010. They told me it would be a HP when I asked for the CLI.

Maybe they use information from a SP if they've done one recently?
