I have a BOA red with a 4k balance and 16k available . Zero APR until November.
I took an offer to use 6k to payoff the only card I have with a balance and with interest. (WF active)
I was under the impression that the transfer would also be interest free but Oops on me apparently because I received statement showing I was charged 132 interest for the transfer.
So frustrated with myself.
I'm assuming I am stuck but the real question is I now have a 10k balance:
Broken down as 4k zero APR and 6K 25 apr for the transfer.
Can these be paid separately? Where do the payments get applied?
I want to pay 6k on the card but I am afraid that it gets applied to the Zero portion first. 4k to that and only 2k to the transfer.
I just want to pay the transfer first.
Thanks for any input
Banks are legally obligated to apply your payment to the highest interest portion of the balance first.
I forgot when that was made law, but it didn't used to be the case.
Could the $132 be the fee to initiate the balance transfer and not interest on the transfer balance? BoA would likely have charged you a fee for initiating the balance transfer itself, even if it wasn't going to charge interest on the balance until your promo is over.
Thanks.
I wish
I was charged 180 for that (3 percent)
I keep kicking myself for just assuming it was no interest
Nevermind, I just reread your post.

When you have 2 different types of balances with different interest rates, any payments over the minimum payment are required to be applied to the highest interest rate balance. So if you pay minimum payment + 6k, the entire 6k will wipe out your high interest balance, except for the interest you've already incurred.

Thanks for providing a concise and easy to understand answer to OP's question because I've been trying to understand this on a different situation. October my Care M/C balance was 6K, then I added a $420 eyeglass purchase with 6mo/0% promo. November I decided to pay card down to a 100% no interest balance. Thought the payment would be 6K but called Synchrony and was told to pay $6224. I've been struggling to understand until saw your post. I should've paid the 6K balance to $0 before impulse buying those glasses. Now realize I literally screwed myself out of benefitting from half the promo. 🤦

Yes it's a good idea never to make a purchase when there's a balance transfer balance, because you lose the grace period on the purchase.
