Move out of Country - CC advice

Ok, Friday I was given an opportunity to relocate with my work for 2-3 years to a tiny, and I mean tiny island in the Pacific Ocean. I know Amex is picky about having an address as a PO Box, but I will have an APO address. Has anyone had any experience with living in another country and maintaining credit cards? Mail that is sent priority usually arrives in 2 weeks, first class is 2-11 weeks. I have Amex, Cap 1, Citi, and Discover cards. Thanks guys!

Can you switch to paperless statements and just use online banking/BillPay?

I've had my AmEx set to a PO Box before.  You just have to call them, and explain the situation. They just have to add the PO Box as your billing address for you. I imagine it would be similar with an APO.

As far as your statements are concerned; I'd just make sure you have a US bank, and US funds to pay your bills from. Then, just make sure you sign into your online accounts to pay the CCs every month.

You may have issues applying for more credit cards while the APO is on file, but it can be done. You have to first App with a physical address; then they have have you call in, since it won't match what they have on file.

If at first you don't succeed; Garden for 6 months, then try again.

Work the system. Don't let the system work you.

Re: Move out of Country - CC advice

I lived in England for about 1 year when I had an AMEX and BOA. I called them and told them the situation. They told me it would not be a problem at all since I had e statement. They said they would notate the account and to call them when I come back which I did.

I didnt have any PO Box.

I assume you will be maintaining a checking at your new destination? Is there a way to have some money left in your US Bank account?

I had transfer to my US Bank account. The same account I used to pay my cards. But overall, they didnt have a problem with it.

Re: Move out of Country - CC advice

I am signed up for e statements on all my accounts, so hopefully that won't be a problem. From what I have gathered regarding the location, is they have a bank that is a division of BOA, and everything will be in USD. I am supposed to talk with people who live there now at some point this week and I have a ton of questions to ask them. did you have any problems with shipments using Amex to England?

Re: Move out of Country - CC advice

i guess i didn't think there would be a problem, anytime i've been abroad for extended periods of time i have another us address i can change the address to (family/close friends)...........but i don't know how it works if you can't keep your current address on file (i.e. renting or selling), which is what i imagine the situation could be? but i can't tell without more information from the OP.

I am moving to Kwajalein and the conditions are that I have to keep a US address, however I don't own a home and really don't want people going through my mail. If I keep using a state that has no state income tax, then I won't have to pay taxes, but I do not have any relatives that live in a state with no income tax. I will figure something out.
I guess I can just have my mail forwarded as well, man that could take forever.

Re: Move out of Country - CC advice

You can search online - there are services that accept your mail - scan it and deliver it via the internet....you can then decide to discard items or have them forwarded to your physical address.

And do bill pay-e delivery for your other items.
