Ok, I am greenhorn here, so maybe I am not clearly understanding. I have seen signature lines where people have two of the exact same card - as an example the Sallie Mae card is one I saw. What am I missing here?

That you can indeed have multiples of the same card? For some cards you can, either directly applying, or by converting another card.
It makes sense for cards with caps, like Sallie Mae, Cash Plus, Freedom, Discover IT etc. So with two Sallie Mae you can cover $500 a month on groceries, or with two Freedoms, get 5% on up to $3000 per quarter, choose different categories on the Cash Plus (or $4,000 per quarter on the same ones) etc
Other times it just happens as the issuer converts cards, so I have two Quicksilvers, which offers no advantage over one.

Thanks for clarification, I just did not realize you could apply for the same card twice!
