My next AMEX CLI Question

I know this has been beat to death around here, but I wanted to get some input. I don't know if I necessarily need a CLI, but I am just bored and I am past 6 months since my previous one. My current limit is 35k, original was 10k, then 3x CLI to 30k, then requested only 35k on the last one. I got the 4506-t and complied and they gave me 35k. Now I dont know what I should ask for, if any. The 4506-T was a little over 6 months ago. Any guidance is appreciated (even if it is you dont really need a CLI, so stand pat).

For the record of disclosure, this is not technically my card, but my DW's, but you get the picture.

The only concern I would have in asking for say $100K (apart from whether I would get it!) would be would it make other issuers wary for future cards if you got it.  But even then we are talking about just $65K in extra credit, which many would get in a small spree.

At one stage Amex denied me the full amount I asked for because I wasn't using the card much.   How much of the $35K is getting used each month?

Re: My next AMEX CLI Question

I am probably averaging around 2.5-3k a month on this card. The high balance in november was 12.5 k. One other month I did 8k. But most months are around 2.5k. These are statement balances I am talking about, and PIF each month.

Re: My next AMEX CLI Question

While the AMEX 3x CLI program offers cardholders an easy way to build a CL, AMEX is doing this on the hope that the cardholder uses the card.

You can ask for $100k, a large portion of that may be allowed, but if you don't utilize some large portion of that and PIF to reduce their risk, AND you expand other CC CL, do not be surprised if that large AMEX CL is CLD to a much lower amount than even now. AMEX (and all other CCC) can be expected to react, on the basis of their own internal models, to reduce their real or perceived credit risks.

Easy come, easy go.

Re: My next AMEX CLI Question

I agree, and this is why I dont really need a CLI. I have plenty of available credit between this and other cards. I may ask for 50k just to do it, or I may hold off. I just can't decide.

Go ahead and ask for the $50k, in all seriousness. It is bugging you. It's only a magical number anyway, it is not real like if you were contemplating charging a large amount on the card, so there is no harm in asking. By asking, you will both get it out of your system and find out what AMEX will grant you.

In the pre-2008 days, I had several cards which were in the range of $30k CL, on lower annual income, and all those large cards were CLD due to large balances. At the end of the day, CLI and CLD are both part of the credit game; they don't mean anything by themselves. What matters is if you get the CL you actually need, and if you don't, if you have limits to your available credit, then you just have to cut back on your borrowing.

Re: My next AMEX CLI Question

Well, I did it. I requested 50k and it was instantly approved. I think I am good with that limit from now on and have no further need to request anymore.

You already got the CLI but that's your call to make  You -- or your wife, actually -- will get countered if she qualifies for less.  A denial will result if the applicant does not qualify at all.
