Re: NFCU - How long did you wait to apply for credit after becoming a member?

Yes, I was wondering this exact question... I joined NFCU mid September 2018...To clear ANY Questions IT's a Soft Pull Now Only... I've been connecting different account to My NFCU checking and saving accounts.. IE, Square, Wells Fargo, Boa accounts... I know it will be a HP, for a NFCU Credit Card, or CLOC, etc... I recently Opened my CSP in Sept, 2018 18.7k SL. Also a Chase FU in March of 2018.. (12k) Chase Freedom, 5k SL about 2.5 years ago . Truck loan 2.7 years ago... other long time CC's etc. My AAOA on CK TU is approx 5 years, 3 years on EX... < 1% Utilization... No Baddies Ever... Scores VG... What's anyone's feelings on my situation...? I could stand the HP.. For My needs I'm thinking to go with the NFCU Platinum card, instead of the Rewards, etc... Just looking for the lowest APR, out of anything in my wallet. But burning a HP, at least I'd want the Highest SL... I keep only $1k each in my NFCU checking and savings, for really nothing, but like I said only opened Mid 09/2018. Thoughts on approval...???

Should I Nike it, And ***Just DO IT*** ...???   Smiley Happy

Thanks all,

I think you should app for NFCU platinum with an excellent score chances of getting high sl is more...since we talking about NFCU we all know how generous they are and I saw people getting 20k-25k SL with around 700s...all the best 👍🏻

Re: NFCU - How long did you wait to apply for credit after becoming a member?

I waited two years.  Had savings and checking with them when I applied.  Starting line was $17,600.

I've had a PenFed checking account for more than a year and have never applied there.  Once had NASA, Alliant, DCU and SDFCU when I was looking for a CC from a credit union.  Cancelled those accounts when Navy hooked me up.

If you apply and get approved hopefully it will make you feel as though you got the best and don't need any of the rest.

Re: NFCU - How long did you wait to apply for credit after becoming a member?

I know NFCU is highly regarded on this forum.  I know their cards can grow but most likely with a boatload of inquiries.  My TU FICO 9 was 825 last week when I applied and was approved for the Platinum card.  I have a good income, very low DTI, low inquiries, etc.  I was approved for a whopping $4200.  I was kind of hoping for at least 10k given everything that I have read and other people with low scores and income getting approved for high limits.  I'm still irritated about it that I didn't even bother posting it in the approval section.  I just don't want to hear all the "it will grow"....."91/3" stuff.  So as always, your results may vary.  Looks like the Navy just blew a torpedo through my hull.  Rant off///

@ Overmedicated,

Exactly... My Credit Portfolio is seamingly similar to yours... I don't want to Open a New account, Thus Lowering my AAOA, A hard Inquiry, for a credit card ( I have Plenty of CC currently AT My stage of MY Life) with some tbh ridiculous and Silly SL of only $ 4-5k .... I only want it for the  low APR... Did You call, or Apped online...??? Seams crazy how some folks here with a BK, 3+ Collections, 5+ 30-60-90 lates and all other kind of Baddies getting a high SL..?? I don't get that..??

I didn't try a recon.  I'm thinking more about cancelling the card and terminating my membership.  This is the only card I would ever apply for there.  The chances at a 2nd card are none as their other offerings don't interest me.  I'm still scratching my head on this one.  I didn't want make a NFCU bashing thread because I feel I got hosed on the SL.

@ Overmedicated... In chatting with a rep from NFCu today.. I think folks with crappy credit get higher SL's because, they kinda know that they will make more money because higher SL comes with higher APR's... Vs Folks with excellent Credit they give them lower SL's because lower APR's. They won't make as much money on lower APR's because folks with excellent credit aren't going to run up a Huge Bill..... Thus they make less $$ than folks who have ehh to bad to ok credit will charge up higher balances, thus more APR... At least that's what I kinda thought and the rep seemed to agree... Altho it's basically 100% derived from the Algorithem they have set up... Thoughts... ?? Smiley Happy oh yea he also said I could cancel the card if I wasn't happy with the APR/ SL, But when I asked if they would refund the Hard Pull... That was a Confident STRONG NO, We can't do that... lol... !!!

Well this whole credit thing is all about risk assesment.  It really is your results may vary. I know that people with our profiles are deemed less risk and therefore given more favorable rates.  If I was the lender I would feel more comfortable lending larger lines to people with a proven record and a long history but obviously that didn't happen here with NFCU.

With some of the approvals I have seen, it really makes no logical sense to me.  NFCU for the most part but other lenders as well.  There seems to be no tried and true pattern of approvals/CLs and denials.  I have seen people denied a Discover card with a great profile.  Macys recently declined an 830 FICO.  We all have to accept that.  I also accept that my SL was determined by a computer and it wasn't personal.  I will probably keep this card.  I did get the lowest APR of course.  I applied because that is 1 thing I don't have is a 0 fee, low APR card.  I didn't have any balances to transfer except statement balances which don't total much.  Maybe if I had something to transfer then they would have given me a larger SL?  Lol...I'll never know.
