Navy fcu info, so others can learn from my cluelessness.

Found out the other night that in militarese "retired" isn't the same as "discharged." :-( !

I'd gone into the LR all excited b/c I thought I'd found the answer to our little prob. DH read the eligibility req's for the nfcu & straightened me out. I'd thought anyone who'd served was eligible for membership, but no. Only if the someone who'd served had retired, i.e. had served a minimum of 12 yrs.-I think he said 12. Just serving & being honorably discharged didn't cut it. Nerts.

I thought it was 22 or 23 years for retirement? My family members who retired Navy or Army were in for at least that. As I think about my retired military uncles, I smile because they're absolutely fun and well, my favorite uncles. Smiley Happy

Retirement is 20 at 75% of pay, 30 at Full (10 or 12 or 18 if you can't make rank which depends on MOS, etc) Also, you can have someone retired for medical reasons (Full pay and benefits) from 'almost' the first day of basic training - the DD214 is very important! DH's is full medical - he could have fought recall in 2001/2002 for medical reasons - but they wanted his brain (not his body) at that point; also, it's kinda hard to say "NO" to the Commandant when he is asking and even called to tell you he was having orders cut, let alone knowing him for 30+ years.

IF your DH had joined while he was AD (and left his share account open) - then you would have memebrship now.

Pertubs me that we train them, invest in them, worry about them - but do very little to counsel them on things that could benefit them.

Retirement is 20 yrs @50% and 30yrs @75% retainer. fyi you do not have to do 20 yrs for your family members to to be elig. for membership.

I joined NFCU because my father is retired Navy. Approved for platinum visa with $10,000 CL. My father joined NFCU today, too.
