New AmEx preapprovals showing up - questions

I became a member 11/15/2018 with two cobranded cards, the Delta Gold and the no-AF Hilton Honors. I did the $1k spend on each to get the SUBs, and since then have continued using them while paying them down. As of last night each is at about 45% and the HH card has all prior statement balances paid off and will re-enter the grace period. Since 2/1 I’ve also paid my aggregate UTI down quite a bit, nearly two scoring thresholds, and have carved off a big chunk of accumulated debt.

This morning I checked for new cards and found preapproval for all of the Delta cards as well as the HH Aspire and HH Ascend, and the Marriott BonVoy card. I don’t need to look at other Delta cards as I don’t fly much and the DG will serve fine for when I do. But on the Hilton cards, I’m curious to hear opinions from those of you who have had different levels of these cards.

I don’t need the top tier card as I won’t justify its $450 AF, not will I hit the spend required for the SUB. However, the additional perks on the next card for only a $95 AF don’t sound bad. For those of you who have moved up to this card, do you feel it was worth it? I know it depends entirely on how much hotel use one has, but I’m interested in hearing opinions based on that. We travel to Cleveland from upstate NY for my wife’s medical treatments 5-6x a year and stay at Hampton Inns when we do (which is the reason I wanted the HH card to begin with). I could likely justify a higher rewards earning with an AF. I’m just curious if you who have it feel that enough rewards are available to make it worth having the $95 AF card over the no-AF card. If I were to get it, I’d likely look to move as much CL from the base card to the new one as possible, and close the base card if need be after a year or longer as I really wouldn’t need two Hilton cards.

That leads to my next question. Accepting that any SL is usually profile-dependent, the fact that I’m being offered these cards due to what has apparently been an encouraging relationship in AmEx’s eyes thus far, is it logical to think that this time I would likely start with a higher SL than the $1k I had on the first card? The usual factors have come into play (perfect payments on every card I have, no new inquiries since I got in with AmEx, UTI improvements across the board, and an improved EX FICO), but simply because they are now offering me a higher card in the line, am I right to think the odds are good that for that better card, the SL would also be better?

Finally, for those who have it, what is your opinion of the Marriott BonVoy card compared to the HH line? Better or on par with one of the HH cards?

I’m not absolutely going to apply to get any of these, as I do want to add a couple AmEx core revolvers and possibly a Gold charge in the not too distant future. Just weighing all the angles at this point.

Thank you for going all the way through this - I know it’s a long post.

Re: New AmEx preapprovals showing up - questions

My thoughts - if you aren’t preapproved for one of AMEX’s core cards, I’d hold off. Your SL on another one of the cobranded cards would likely be the undesirable $1k. From what I’ve seen, it would be best to avoid collecting a bunch of AMEX $1k SL cards since they seem to grow very slowly.

Once you see a preapproval for a core card, I’d say AMEX is then willing to play ball and you’ll see a SL that is more useful.

Have you been able to get an CLIs on either of your current AMEX cards?

Re: New AmEx preapprovals showing up - questions

That does make sense. I have held off on pulling the CLI trigger even though the 61 day mark was 5 weeks ago. I had high UTI at the time and knew it would be a No. I decided to wait, pay things down, let my scores increase and update with EX and Amex and then try at a later date.

Most of that is accomplished and now I’m waiting for scores to update (my Target closes today, both Amex cards close tomorrow, and between these three alone I’ve paid off $1300 in this cycle - looking to see scoring updates when the next statements cut since I’ve fallen through individual and aggregate thresholds). I figured it may well pay off to wait until the updates are reflected. I figured one way or another, either new preapprovals may indicate better odds of a CLI or a CLI may signify that preapprovals would be coming. In my case, preapprovals showed up first. I’ll likely still hold off at the very least until scoring updates, and I may not even move on any of these at all. I don’t want a bunch of cobranded cards to block me from a BCE/BCP and/or ED cards in the future.

i will downgrade my delta gold after a year. I travel light, gold's perk has no benefit for me.

Definitely keep room for the BCP/BCE, especially if you have significant grocery spend. DW has both and with grocery spend for 5 mouths, we max out the 6% offering on the BCP and then move onto the BCE for the 3%.

Lol same here and two of mine are high school athletes. We go through a lot of groceries. Yeah I looked at BCE/BCP, ED, and CM, and the BC cards are best matched to my expenses. I’m looking forward to qualifying for one Smiley Happy

You might be preapproved for more cards. Go to the "apply" for the card you want and it might pop up as a preapproval.

Re: New AmEx preapprovals showing up - questions

That’s what I did and those 6 cards are Pre-Approved. I’m holding for now until scores and UTI update in my app and then I’ll see what move to make.

#YOLO

^^^ I think that’s pretty accurate when it comes to the advice you gave me on the Amex DG and HH.

And, it worked out just as you said! So, I’ll give it right back to you. Lol

In all seriousness though, waiting isn’t always a bad idea. The “strike while the iron is hot” thing comes to mind but, patience is a virtue. You may get one now and get a $1k SL, or you could wait a bit and get $5k or $10k.

Good luck to you, broski!

Lol thanks man. The thing is, now that the preapprovals are there, I know I can go after them if I choose to. I would just rather get core cards than different versions of the cobranded ones I have. Maybe I’ll YOLO it at some point, but not today Smiley Happy
