I believe they start you with their basic 'Red' card and then depending on your yearly spending habit, they can bump you up to the gold - platinum or elite store card
Red card - if you spend $0 - $499 per year
Elite - if you spend $2500 or more per year
Not sure about the others
The Red card doesnt expire but the others do every 2 years and they send you another card ; at least that's what I was told.
You might get the card within a week
Not sure if you can app for the AMEX in-store. Im going there today so i'll find out.

I had not planned on getting the card but figured the 20% discount was worth it. Sounds like they are like JCP with their cards. We like Macy's and will spend some money with them. My Wife has their Amex and has had is since they started to offer that card.
Nowe will will get the double mailings!

True you cant beat their coupons. Some of their items are practically 80% off with the 20% that you get in the mail.
