I already have, with Amex: a Gold ($3000 PoT limit), biz platinum ($50,000 PoT limit), BBP ($7000 limit) and BBC ($6200 limit). About 9 months ago I got drunk and mistakenly applied for a Cash Magnet card and received a $1000 limit. I was annoyed and never used it, then "upgraded" it a month later to a BCE. I've used it for PayPal at 3% back but the $1000 limit is the lowest I have and limits its use in my life.
I've asked 3 times for CLIs on the BCE but am always auto-rejected.
I was just approved for the PayPal Mastercard with a SL of $7000. I can't think of any reason to use the BCE as my groceries and gas are paid for elsewhere.
Can it be "upgraded" to BCP and, if so, is the first year AF waived? Not sure what else to do with it. Thanks!

threefour options:
1: Wait/improve credit and income: Give amex some time and hopefully you'll be able to increase your limit, only ask for $3k (total) when you do ask, and after that if you go up to $3k, only ask for $9k after that.
If you ask for too much, you could spook them when they would have otherwise approved a lower amount.
2: ask support to lower your BBP/BBC limits to give yourself a better chance of the BCE CLI in the future.
3. close it, but only do so if you're planning to keep the gold long term, you don't want to not have an amex personal card as a biz customer
4. disable POT and hope that tells Amex you have no intention of using those limits and plan to solely use their cards as charge cards. would appreciate the option from them to get rid of that limit altogether.
Can it be "upgraded" to BCP and, if so, is the first year AF waived? if you get a special offer to do so, it can be, otherwise no. There's various upgrade offers. $75/$1k spend/6 months/AF not waived and $150/$1k spend/6 months/AF waived first year. but whether or not there is an offer is up to the giant amex computer to decide

Thanks for the great advice! Can I bother you to tell me a bit more about #3? Why is it important to have a personal card as well?

I wouldn't upgrade it. If it's useless, you should just sock drawer or close it. The thing is, you will probably be able to increase the credit limit down the road. But if you don't find the card useful, why bother?

getting additional biz cards might result in HPs if you don't have a personal card, whereas if you have a personal card, the chances of a HP are extremely small
it also wouldn't surprise me if there's other background stuff going on as well that 'improve your standing' with amex so to speak because you're a personal customer as well that would make it worth it to ensure you remain a personal customer
Just as a data point, I have a family member who im helping with credit, they also got the AMEX BCE with a starting limit of 1k, we tried for a CLI after 90 days and light use and also got the auto-reject.
My next test will be to try another CLI after the next 90 days of them using more of the limit and paying it off in full.
We also decided to go for an AMEX business card which they approved for the BC card with 7k limit, so maybe its just the BCE in general thats the issue?
I dont see why they wouldnt upgrade to the preferred version.
Also just a random data point, the paypal card is the only card I ever had a CLD from, which wasnt a surprise, as I was not using it much.
I'll bet it's some total credit thing. I have had bce for a year. Initial limit, $6K, at 6 months, auto cli to $9000. I just was approved for 3X to $27000. The same month, I was approved for hilton, co $1K. I think I have reached my current total limit with them.

One use case for the BCE (which strangely is missing on the BCP) is the 3% for online shopping (capped at $6K) This works even when the merchant doesn't take paypal (OTOH, the paypal card is uncapped). With the cap, this is worth a max of $60 a year over a 2% card, so not that amazing!

I dunno, it's really strange. I appreciate the info, makes me feel a little better.
