Now that AmEx has eliminated their pre-approval site….

Is there a problem with checking on their full application even if one is not expecting to accept their offer? When they had a pre-approval, it never seemed like an issue to check and see what happened, but their new site seems like a more serious process and even if they say there is no hit to one's score, what they do not say is if there is any hit to one's future chances if one declines their offer?

Was there an official announcement that the pre-approval tool has been taken away?

amex has "apply with confidence" you will not have any credit impact unless you accept an approved application:

that being said, if you continiously apply and decline, apply and decline that's pretty suspicious behavior and I can't imagine that improves your potential welcome offer/approval odds/credit limit if you finally do accept

if you do decide to apply, decide for yourself the minimum you'll be willing to accept to take the card. if the offer doesn't meet that, I would decline the offer. I would then wait at least 30+ days to apply again.

That was what I saw as well. No announcement, it was just gone.

I periodically used their old Pre-qualify site (and a few others) as a way of judging how I was doing, without intending to get a card right then. I had not really thought about any part of the response other than for which cards (if any) they said I was pre-approved/pre-qualified.

Again, thanks for pointing that out. I had not really considered that it might look like I was offer shopping, as I never really paid attention. I rarely checked multiple times in a month, usually, it was every few months. I will be careful in the future. :-)
