PC Chase Sapphire Preferred to Reserve

Hello Everyone,

I have a CSP that I am thinking of PC'ing to a CSR as I could really use the travel credit and 3x points on travel in the next couple of months.

I would apply for it and get the bonus, however I'm currently 6/24 and would need to wait until April 2019 to be below 5/24 again.

I do have a couple of questions:

1) Would the travel credit be immediately available?

2) I know that the CSR has a minimum 10K limit, my CSP is at 5.5K, would I have to take a HP to raise it to 10K?

Thank you!

1. Yes. I'd imagine as soon as the product change is complete.

2. Yes. Or you can move limits from other cards if you have other Chase cards.

Re: PC Chase Sapphire Preferred to Reserve

Also keep in mind to PC to reserve your CSP needs to be at least 12 months old. I'm in the same boat as you, don't want to wait until Aug 2019 so I'm willing to take a HP to get to $10k and forego the signup bonus on the reserve but I can't PC until this coming August. Like the song says the waiting is the hardest part

While April 2019 is a long way away, do your calculations show it's worth it?   You are giving up 50K UR points, so roughly you would need to spend $50K on travel and dining in that time to make getting the extra UR over the CSP worth while.   If you plan to use Global Entry and lounge, then it's less of a stretch, or if you will be using existing URs at 1.5 rather than 1.25 on the Chase Portal.

Just asking because you mentioned the travel credit (which isn't free!) and the extra UR, which while adding value to having the CR, IMO rarely would alone justify giving up the SUB without a lot of spend.

Re: PC Chase Sapphire Preferred to Reserve

Thank you all for the feedback!

My CSP is more than 12 months old so I know on that end I am good. I think I will take the HP and reallocate limit from other cards if they don't move my limit past 10k. I will wait a month so I can bring my utilization down a bit on another card.

I agree that it's not a good idea to miss out on the 50k bonus. My plan does include PC'ing again at some point in 2019 and re-applying for a CSR to get the bonus again at some point.
