Just call them and ask. If the rep says no, then call the manager. I did not wait until the AF hit. I did it after I had redeemed the 40,000 points, which was 4 months after the account was opened. It's obvious that I signed up just for the bonus.

Ok thanks. I still have my points, but I'll probably be redeeming soon. How many times did you have to call? Also did you PC to SM? Or the no-AF version?
