PNC Convenience Checks

Has anybody ever used a PNC convenience/BT check?

Here's my question... the letter attached to the check has the normal verbiage, "... transfer high-rate balances, make essential purchases, cover unexpected expenses and more."  So far, so good.

But on the back where the FAQ and fine-print is located, there's this:

Q. What would prevent a convenience check from being processed?

A. A request to process a convenience check may be denied if it would cause your credit card account to exceed its credit limit; or if your credit card account is closed, overlimit, delinquent, charged-off, or is reported lost or stolen; or is written to pay off or pay down amounts you owe to PNC Bank or one of our affiliates; or it is made payable to an individual; or for any other reason in our sole discretion.

Pretty boilerplate stuff, but one thing got my attention... "or is made payable to an individual."  That would seem to preclude depositing one of the checks into a bank account.

I've not seen this spelled-out before with checks from other lenders.  The deal I have isn't the absolute best but it's decent - 4% fee for 0% through January 2024, and since I have no other use for the card I figured I'd use it for this.  I may give them a call but I wouldn't expect a front-line CSR to be well-versed on something this obscure, and frankly I'm not willing to get supervisors involved just to get an answer that won't be binding, anyway.

If I decide to go forward I could do a BT instead and just shuffle funds around (same difference in the end) but it would be simpler to just cash a check.  I'm thinking the wording is probably just to give themselves another way to enforce preventing someone using a check to pay another PNC debt, but I'm interested to see what the community thinks.

Very interesting . We get these weekly And I mean it not kidding lol  for DH and I . I have not used them but was considering it, however I have always in the past wrote out checks sent to us and made it out to one of us and deposited it. Glad you posted this . Would love to know if anyone has done this ?

Same here on doing a deposit, and I'm sure we're not alone.

I truly doubt it would be an issue, it's just that I've not seen that phrasing before.  Heck, that's one of the primary advantages of the checks, to pay for stuff/services (including individuals) where using a credit card is problematic.  Maybe I'm overthinking this, LOL.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: PNC Convenience Checks

My take is general boilerplate lingo.  Just like penfed subject to credit approval, etc.  Just my 2 cents to cover them legally in-case they decide to not do such transfer for another reason

I think you're right.  I'll probably be making one out to myself and sticking it in the nearest ATM before the weekend is over, LOL.

If this was an actual issue I'm sure we'd have heard something about it by now.

If you do make one out to yourself, can you please return to this thread and confirm that you had no issues (including being charged for a cash advance)?  Thanks!

I made a check out to myself and deposited it into my PNC checking account. It was classified as a balance transfer and not a cash advance. Worked fine for me!

Re: PNC Convenience Checks

Alrighty, circling back now... the check finally cleared after "only" 10 days (!!!) but everything is fine. Smiley Very Happy

It posted as "Promo Convenience Check Wilmington DE" and the fee posted as "*Finance Charge*Balance Transfer Fee" and was 4% as advertised.  Possibly notable, it only cleared last night but they back-dated it to 8/21 (which is still seven days after I cashed it).

All-in-all a good experience.  I guess I can now say I'm glad I didn't close the card. Smiley Happy

Edited to add:  my cash advance available limit is the same as before (which is quite small anyway, FWIW) so no concerns there.
