I'm in Texas. PNC branches are not. A few months back I got an interesting pre-qual CC mailer and when I tried online got snuffed. I called and asked why are they mailing me offers I can't accept? I was told that sometimes those with existing relationships can get approved for credit products. I said. Great, let's open a checking account. She said that wouldn't work because at that time they were not extending beyond their footprint at all. In retrospect this might've been a good HUCA opportunity. But I only HU.
Having forgotten about that experience of a few months ago, and having recently read an interesting PNC approval, I decided to visit the website. I started filling in the app when deja vu said, Not again! I stopped. Called. Asked. This time the CSR said after 6 months as a banking member one becomes eligible for credit products. You sure 'bout that, I asked. Yeppers, she said.
I opened a basic checking account, deposited $25, and it went to review! Just now I got the Approved! email. So the clock is ticking -- see ya again come end of July.
Hope it works for you and you don't get an "out of footprint" denial in 6 months time! But providing CSR was right, should be fine.
Took them almost exactly 6 months after opening my online account to my 1st preapproval, another 11 months to get my 2nd preapproval (and automatic $2.5K CLI on the 1st card), and another month for them to start sending me preapprovals for a 3rd card, which I accepted after 4 mailed and 1 emailed preapproval. 20 months from initial account opening to $65K total CL across 3 cards.
I've never had more than $1K in my account and their nearest brick and mortar branches are almost 200 miles away in Manhattan.

Good stuff there -- probably one of your approval posts put the idea in my head to seek them out. Thanks.
Or take a CCVACATION like i did and just open it in brick and mortar branch and hit a few other banks out of your geo fence while at it. What I did to get that card among others. If out of town anyways for business or vacation then banks are fair game and most are glad to take a CC app while there. Now that I have a PNC CC account if I so choosed I could apply for other cc or products with them without issue

I read that. I liked it. Hopefully ...
Thank you for the datapoints!
I just opened a free savings account at PNC and it was approved online in California.
I'm going to leave $100 in there and see what happens in 6 -7 months.
