Pay credit cards off but then start running them back up. Help!

So I have been paying off my credit cards but then I start to run them back up every time.  I am afraid to cut them up in case I have an emergency that comes up - plus it doesn't help since I have all of the numbers in another file.   How does everyone else keep from running up their cards after paying them off?

I have the same problem, always have.

I run them up when i carry them with me, do not carry them with you. This helped me.

The previous poster was correct. You can't carry them with you.

Take the cards...and the written list...and put them in the bottom of an ice cube tray. Then...yes...fill it with water and put it in the bottom back corner of your freezer.

If you truly have an emergency, it will be there for you. It will be your EP....Emergency Popsicle.

Good advice Lynette.  I'm reluctant to have the credit cards in my home.  I certainly wouldn't want them in my refrigerator.  OP you may want to do a placetemy on some of your cards.  You can do it without calling Dave Ramsey  Smiley Wink

Freezing... not a good idea... the cards are still there and you KNOW you will just run them under hot water for a minute to thew them out.  If you  cut them up you can still use the account number  for online purchases.   You need will power and no one on this board can give you that.

You could also use a healthy dose of the Suze Orman show every day.  .

Write down your personal financial and credit goals, including a target of how much in savings, your plans for credit, and so forth. Write out a budget with your monthly expenses. Set aside from each paycheck your planned savings amount (into savings) and the money needed for budgeted expenses (into checking.) You can only use a CC for something that's on your budgeted list; something for which you already have money in the bank. So this means things like gas and grocs, rent/ utilities/ cellphone if you can pay by CC, and so forth. If you want to buy something that's not in your budget, you'll have to pay with cash or a check, and even then, only after you've paid off your CC's.

Keep a copy of these two lists (goals and budget) on your computer desktop and another in your wallet. Pull them out and look at them, over and over, until you can chant them in your sleep.

And yes, get the cards out of your wallet and into the freezer or anywhere else dramatic enough to force you to realize that you are betraying your plans and dreams by accessing them. If you can control impulse buying, you can carry one at a time for those budgeted necessities.

Right now, your I-wants are out-shouting your I-needs. Creating a set of goals, complete with a plan on how to reach them and a dream for what you'll do when you hit those goals, will put you in charge of your credit use and your spending. You'll get a lot more pleasure out of Stuff when you buy it because you planned for it.

Re: Pay credit cards off but then start running them back up. Help!

Having an annual credit goal has really helped me. I have done this for the last three years running and have met or exceeded my target in each year. This year I was done in July. Realizing that you will not be able to meet your goal if you make that purchase can frequently put and end to a transaction you'd be better off not making. It will also help you focus on a plan and curb indiscriminate app'ing which can really be detrimental in the long run. Don't be too hard on yourself, but on the other hand you do have to exercise so discipline if you want to get ahead!

Buy what you really need and not what you want....

even though i  was so tempted to grab one of those PS3 for $299 over bf weekend. But I realiased that I don't need it. I have 3 computers at home. computers are good gaming system for the type of games I play.

But, I woudl not have puchased a PS3 even if I didnt have a computer. I don't play computer games much.
