PayPal Cashback World Mastercard

Hello!  First time poster here. I've never seen a forum like this.  The world of finance in general has always been a mystery to me.  I hope I can learn something!

I have been using this card for a month now.  I use this card exclusively on all purchases, online and in store.  Out of 32 purchases, only one was rewarded with the 3% cashback.  I don't understand the fine print.

EXAMPLE:

"Earn 3% on Eligible Purchases you make using your Card Account through your PayPal account (online or in-store)".

AND

"Earn 2% on Eligible Purchases made everywhere else that Mastercard is accepted".

What's the difference?  If I am using this card, am I not using PayPal?  Is the "Eligible Purchases" term the catch?

Thanks!

Re: PayPal Cashback World Mastercard

For an example (This is just one example for online purchases):

You visit a website selling a product or service that offers PayPal as a payment method.

Here, you chose PayPal and not credit card to pay.

At checkout, it sends you to PayPal to confirm the purchase amount.

PayPal will prompt you with payment source options.

In your payment source list, check the PayPal Mastercard option and then uncheck the PayPal balance option.

When you authorize the payment that way, it should give you the 3%.

If you just use the PayPal Mastercard like a normal credit card at checkout without going through PayPal and doing the above, it might only give you 2%.

Can confirm that this is a perfect description of how the typical 3% transaction would work.

No might about it, it WILL give only 2%!   But the above is correct and explains the OPs issue.   Using the card as a credit card is not using the paypal account, the card is issued by a bank (Sync) and so, in normal use, is "just" a credit card.   This is similar to any other cobranded credit card, e.g. the Chase Amazon card.  If you go to your favorite restaurant and use it there, you are not making an Amazon purchase.

So to maximize rewards on the Paypal Cashback card, online you need to select paypal as a payment method whenever it is available.  It will maybe take a few more clicks, but you also save time by not having to enter card details.   For in-store use, most stores will not have paypal available and so you will get 2%

Welcome @damnyankee36

Best part it will show you the % as soon as it post. Dont have to wait till the end of the month to see. You'll see the rewards block. Each transaction is placed when it posts. You can move it to PP instanly or wait till it builds up. From PP if you have it. You can do an instant transfer to your bank or use it as I do to purchase goodies on eBay.

Others above have it correct.

Another way to think about it...The problem is you are not "checking out with PayPal" at these websites.  You are merely paying with a credit card that happens to be a PP Mastercard.

Re: PayPal Cashback World Mastercard

You get 2% when using the card, as a Mastercard,  through Mastercard payment processing.

You get 3% when you use the card through PayPal payment processing (either hit the PayPal button at checkout online/in app <or> if you use the qr code pay process in store (not widely accepted).

Keep in mind, that if an app like say, chevron, offers the PayPal button,  you can pay through that and get the extra 1% that way.

You will get 3% when you check out at a store that offers payment via the PayPal app. Typically there will be a sign with a QR code on it at the checkout.

Back to gardening until Late February 2026.
