I recently got a paypal credit line (smart connect) and a debit card through them in the hopes of building up my credit a bit better since I don't have any credit cards. I was wondering if anyone has a guide on how to add smart connect as a backup payment source for the debit card. I have tried finding it and haven't had any luck. I'm sure it's something simple but I only find mentioning of it being possible without any instructions.

i just did this yesterday, when you receive your debit card, and you go to activate it online, there it will ask you to create a pin number, pick a pin, and then it will ask you to choose a backup payment method. choose the paypal smart connect. as i was told as long as you run the card as credit (dont use the pin #) it will work anywhere mastercard is accepted. just tried mine this morning at a gas station for smokes. hope this helps.
weird, it asked for a paypal account to link it to but never asked for a backup payment. Maybe it automatically took the default from my paypal account so it's currently using the credit line as backup. I will have to use it today to see if that's the case.
maybe you can login and check, the first option on mine was my bank account and i had to change it.
If you've already activated your card and need to check to confirm that is the case then here are the steps in doing so:
1. Log into your PayPal account
2. Look for your PPSC card and click on the link in the upper right corner of that box that says "View Card Details"
3. When that screen pops up you'll see a box on the right that says Manage my credit account. Underneath that you'll click on the link "Update account preferences"
4. When you get to that screen just simply click on the first option "Change" under the heading CHECKOUT Preferences.
From there you will be able to see what you're current backup method is as well as given the option to choose a new source if you wish which would include any of the Credit cards, bank account, and smart connect you have on file.
Hope this helps ya out
Hmm that is exactly what I was looking for, it shows that my credit is the credit source but when I went to the store to use the card it didn't work. Any idea why that is? The debit card shows 0 on it because that's what's on it but I thought it would just go straight from the paypal

Did it decline the transaction? Normally you're debit card either works as a "debit" card using your bank account as a funding source, or as a "credit" card using you're smart connect account as the funding source. In order to use it as a credit and ultimately with your smart connect account you must make sure to specify to the clerk that it has to be run as a CREDIT and not a debit transaction. That should fix the problem, although I don't have any experience with that because before I attained my smart connect account my debit card would first use any PP balance i had and then revert to my bank account or debit card on file. After adding my smart connect account it has always automatically taken it from it even when I accidently ran it as a debit once although there was a few dollars on my PP balance that was taken first so that may explain why it accepted it to be run as the debit. I just always clarify that it has to be run credit when I use it, because even if you're using your PP balance anytime you use it as a credit you automatically get 1% CB so thats just free $
If that doesn't work for you then I would contact CS and find out what the problem is because it def shouldn't be working that way!
He must have done something wrong, I'll run to the store and do a self checkout and try it there.

Yep just tried and it says declined. It could be because I just activated it this morning but doubt it. I'll have to contact CS and see if they have any idea why it's not working.
