Penfed Question

I'd like a Penfed card or any type of CL with a good interest rate (CL at least 5000-10000) TU/680 EQ/691 EX/647

My wife's are TU/706 EQ/703 EXP/674. She signed up for Penfed membership. Should I make it a joint account? My income is double hers. Does Penfed look at household income for both approval and cl? We do have some cc debt (50k), but no baddies. Scores are decent-probably due to long history, few inq. What are my best chances for approval-joint or my wife's alone due to better scores, though much less income. (100k vs.45k)  With my high debt, am I better off with ccc's to try to get an attractive BT offer while paying down my debt? Thanks for any input.

Re: Penfed Question

1) Avoid joint accounts at all costs. Joint accounts are nothing but a headache. Once you make an account joint the only was you can get out of it is to close the account.

2) PenFed only considers individual applications and only looks at individual income.

3) PenFed is not going to like you much with $50K in CC debt. In the current economic climate not many CCC's are. PenFed is pretty conservative. You might do better with BofA. You might also do better after you pay down some of that debt.

4) With a $45K income, a 670+ FICO, no recent new credit and no recent baddies your wife can probably obtain a $5K to $10K CL with them. Get the Platinum Cash Rewards card, treat it as a pif account. It is not their lowest APR card. The rewards are good but nullified if you carry a balance. Once you get the card you must pay for all gasoline and groceries with it to get the maximum benefit of the rewards.

Be prepared to prove anything you put down on a PenFed app. I did not have to and I have a $10K CL and my SO did not have to - she was instantly approved for a $10K and a $35K/4.5% auto loan that she did not ask for. But many have had to document their app, so be ready.

PedFed is great. Excellent CSR's available 24 hrs. a day. I am very happy them and have other accounts with them. If she joined in the last 60 days she may as well apply for whatever credit products she wants - they already pulled a hard inquiry.

Thanks.   Did we get a hard pull just for joining the cu? Or once she applies for the card?

Re: Penfed Question

One more question. my wife joined online  and has not sent back the signature card. I guess as soon as I send it back, they'll do a hard or soft pull? When do they pull your cr? I'm now hesitant to apply because they are conservative and I don't want to waste a hard pull.

Re: Penfed Question

They pull the hard inquiry as soon as you apply.  So, if she's a member, they already pulled her credit.  They allow you to use the same initial inquiry for up to 90 days I believe. So basically, within that window, she can apply for say a credit card or a car loan and they won't keep pulling her credit...they will use the same credit pull they used when they opened the account and base their decision on that.

Re: Penfed Question

Correct. The hard pull is done at time of membership. How long that pull is good for is a secret. It is beleived to be good for 60 to 90 days. I was told by one of there CSR's that anything over 60 days is sketchy. They are a great outfit with great service - just a little bit tight. If you can clear the bar you will love it. I do not think they are going to like $50K in outstanding CC debt.
