Possible Product Change

Hey everyone, just in need of some input or suggestions from you all.

So, I've been pretty happy with my cards that I have right now, but the ThankYou points on the Citi ThankYou Preferred card just seem to be pretty lacking in my opinion. I have been thinking about Product Changing to either the Double Cash card or the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card, (no annual fee). I don't travel too much right now, but I have been looking forward to accumulating miles since I do wanna travel later on and don't want to spend as much for flights. I'm still torn though on what card would be the better option now to product change to. I'm trying to not incur any hard pulls or open any new accounts, since I do already have 4 cards and that's enough for me for right now.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Possible Product Change

You can product change to the dividend card or the double cash. Keep in mind both these cards are not TY point cards. Use Your Points Before PC! Sometimes you have to get a CSR in a good mood to make the change.

Re: Possible Product Change

I would not change to the AA card, reserve that for a new card for sign up bonus, remember Citi only gives one bonus per family per 24 mo

Re: Possible Product Change

Ahh okay. So I would lose out on the Sign Up bonus, which I could get later on, but has to be 24 months after I got the ThankYou sign up bonus?

Re: Possible Product Change

Citi sign up bonuses are grouped by card family. One bonus per family per 24 mo.

TY point cards are one family, AA cards are another family. However business cards count as another famiy. TY business, AA business.

Re: Possible Product Change

Oh, so sorry to be super repetitive, I just wanna make sure I understand it correctly. So, if I did product change to that card, I could get the sign up bonus since it's considered a different card family?

Re: Possible Product Change

Yes. You could Open an AA card tomorrow and get the bonus.

However to get a new TY bonus you need to wait 24 mo after the TY card was open.

Citi PC takes a while to become new card

Use Points before PC, 60 clock or they will be gone for good (unless you PC to another TY points card)

Re: Possible Product Change

No bonus for product change. PC to AA will not get you any AA bonus, due to it being a Sign Up Bonus.

You don't want to PC to AA becasue no bonus and it stars the AA timer to 24 mo.

Re: Possible Product Change

Agreed, go with DC or Dividend over AA MileUp.

In addition to the bonus clock rules, I think a little caution is appropriate with most no-AF airline/hotel cards. Such cards offer limited redemption options and yet provide no strong incentive to use that travel partner (like free bags, a renewal night, etc.) that AF cards often provide.
