I took about a 10 year hiatus on credit and stubbornly paid for everything in cash...including all cars and almost $30k in vacations. Trying to get this sorted out finally. This is where I am atm and what I'm trying to do...
I currently have FAKOs reporting around 670s. The one CC I've kept around is only 3 yrs old and didn't report to Equifax so nothing really there at 6 mos yet...unfortunate.
I have one weird power bill thing from like 5 yrs ago that I swear was paid. I disputed and it will probably fall off in 10 more days. I have a $200 cruddy card I've kept around for 3 yrs mostly because it has no AF and 9.9% interest. It's secured and will never CLI without help + can't graduate. I have Cap 1 platinum and QS1 with $200 and $300 limits at about 2 mos and 4 store accounts/cards (FH, Kays, JCrew and VS with$1400 combined). Unfortunately my little app spree happened before my scores started going up a little (removed error) so all the limits are terrible.
I accidently let the QS1 report with 66% util. That should be fixed the next time the statement gens in about 2 weeks. The plan is to have a completely clean report and util reported at below 10% (paid QS1 to $0) right around the beginning of August.
I really want a Chase Freedom, a Discover It and maybe one more solid rewards card so that I can garden for a couple of years and be ready to apply for a mortgage.
Considering I probably don't want them to look at Equifax, need them to cut me some slack for AAoA + 3 inquiries recently and new accounts + lack of experience with higher credit limits etc etc etc...do I have a shot?
What order should I apply in?
What would go good with Freedom and Discover It?
Is it possible to recon for these if I get rejected?
Wish I could help, but I am new to the game also. Lot of good people here to help you out though. Good Luck
I don't have prior experience with Discover It but I was just recently approved for the Chase Freedom. The pulled EQ(691 FAKO) and EX (701 FAKO) at the time with no baddies reported (at that time). My AAoA was 0.9 yrs. I applied online and received the 7-10 message and called immediately to recon. After speaking with a super nice rep and explained my lack of revolving history (reason for denial and I only had 1 revolver- $700 Fingerhut line) and that I wanted to be in with Chase so I would take a low CL to start with, she put me on hold a few times and then approved me for $500 CL. I was thrilled.
Do you have a chase relationship?
What are your scores if you don't mind me asking? I applied to chase with scores around 670-680. I heard they can be a bit stubborn.. Maybe you should app with Discover first. I've seen people approved in the mid to low 600's for Discover it, but then again it also depends on your report over all. I would definitely wait until your lower utilizatino posts to the bureaus.
If your minds set on Chase freedom my advice is to go on their website and see what you Pre Qualify for.
Their site is pretty accurate so if it pre approves you for the freedom I'd say you got a good shot at it. I would recomend Sallie Mae over Discover it tho

None at all at this point.

I'm not sure what my real scores are. The FAKOs through EIDT show around low/mid 670s. I'm hoping getting the util down and dropping off the bad on my report will give it a boost.
Thanks all for the advice. My big worry is that they'll all look at Equifax. The FAKO is showing 655 right now but I don't think anything is at 6 months yet so I'm not sure they'd even get a score. I'll keep checking the pre-qualify things. I get the cards suggested but not really pre-qualified I think. Some of them might even soft pull EQ and come up blank lol
It would be nice to land a couple of these. They would be right at 6 mos at the beginning of 2015.
Depending on your level of motivation...my scores were in the low 600's when I got a 2k Freedom instant approval. I had a significant, long standing relationship with Chase and I have no doubt that my approval had nothing to do with my credit and everything to do with the amount of seasoned cash I had sitting in my checking account with them. (And my credit card history was basically NOTHING - I had never had a credit card in my life until about six months before that and only had 2 small Cap1 cards in my wallet.)

We have a Chase bank nearby and I'm in the market for a new checking account (current bank bought out and placed $500 minimum on accounts and we have 2). Maybe I'll give the Freedom a shot when the baddie is gone and if I fail I'll see about building some history with them through checking/savings. If it works we'll probably go with a decent credit union instead.
Looks like my Experian Fico 08 weighs in at 692. I still have a really thin file though and Equifax is probably at least 50pts lower if it even reports. Surprised to be that close to 700 though. I should be sitting pretty in 6 mos if I don't do anything (else) stupid.
Would it be a possibility to put a freeze on equifax before apping? I'll probably app Freedom, Discover and then 1 other. Chase returns no results on pre-qual right now (equifax maybe?) while Discover is trying to tempt me with the Discover It.
I think I could get approved for that one but biding my time. If I can get them to pull Experian I might be able to have 700+ in a couple weeks.
