It's perfectly normal to ask the customer to write their SSN on a scrap of paper. This way I don't have to memorize it the whole time until I get home and begin the app spree.
Thats hella shady. I would be talking to that persons manager pronto! Any time I have applied instore for a card the social was entered into their cc swiper.
I applied for Samsclub M/C credit card in their store and I filled out the app myself and gave it to them. I never heard of such a thing. OP's right. All done on the phone and it took a couple of minutes.
I handed the manager an the sales girl, my DL - a major cc (ritz) and a slip with my phone number and social.
As for SCT, I can't accept any pre-approvals since im under 21, learned that the hard way a few months ago, when I accepted the pop up for fuel rewards, and was denied for the card act in 2009.
I am curious to see the denial reason, and am wondering why my annual income wasnt asked for? like does comenity hate me that much where they wont give me a basic store card?!

Since Pottery Barn is Comenity, it might be a blessing in disguise that you didn't get it (of course, assuming you don't... they could still say yes).
They seem to single out people for AA who have excessive (in their judgement) new accounts or inquiries. I came so close to going for a Motorola credit card last summer, but I'm now so glad I didn't. I like to keep my credit life as "drama free" as possible, and Comenity seems to be a source of drama for a not-insignificant number of people on this site.
You have some seriously nice cards... adding Comenity to your arsenal would be like adding a side of sardines to a filet mignon dinner - it doesn't really add anything to your meal, and if not dealt with just right could mess up your main dish.

I know, but I love shopping at Pottery Barn so I tried for the card 20% back in rewards would be so nice. As for the AA, from what ive seen people who were shut down had comeniy majors in the mix, I would just have this card with them, which is a store card.
I wish I would of apped online, the whole process was super weird. My EQ was pulled so I better get a legit reason for the denial.
You may want to stop apping denials are starting and that's a sign to slow down.
You have more credit cards and credit at 20 than most have in a lifetime.
Too much, too soon can lead to disaster.
Garden for a year or two and then you may want to consider consolidating some cards down the road and have a rewards plan rather than a shot gun app plan that I have seen over the past months.
