I just left Home Depot with my brother, where he was purchasing some building materials to do some repairs on his garage. He selected around $1800 worth of building materials and tried to use his new Capital One QuickSilver card. It's a new card he just receivedt the other day just for the home repairs and has a $10,000 limit. I recommended that he get the card since I knew he'd qualify, having a Fico of 750.
When we tried to check out, he was asked for his id (which I found odd since I've bought things with my credit card there and have never been asked). Anyway, after he showed his id, the clerk said the transaction was declined. Declined? He has never even used the card before--this would have been his first charge. The cashier tried it again but no go.
The cashier said he didn't know why it was declined and that my brother should contact Capital One. He wound up using his bank debit card to get the things he needed since he didn't have the time to hassle with them this morning. He says he'll be contacting Cap One some this weekend, though. I feel like an idiot for recommending the card now!
I've never had this problem using a new card before and was wondering if this is something Cap One does on new cards. His card has the chip so could that have something to do with it?
Does anyone have any experience with having a brand new Quicksilver card declined?
A first charge of ~ $1800 could be suspicious, perhaps depending on his credit profile. And I can imagine that Home Depot is a good place to try stolen cards, busy, unmotivated staff etc, and some stuff that could be quickly resold.
He might see a fraud alert if he logs into the Cap One account.

I would have contacted Capital One on the spot and since he used his debit card, he longer gets th 1.5% cash back. Merchants are suppose to check customer IDs, otherwise people can use any card they steal. If they recognize you then that's okay.

Is the card activated?
You stated it was your brothers first time using it, so it could have been an oversight. I know it sounds simple, but it does happen to the best of us.
I personally have never had an issue charging my Cap One cards.
Yeah, i would've called Cap One on the spot. I would just get out of line and resolve then get back in. That's $27 he could've gotten. But I agree with the above poster. Was it even activated successfully? What I typically do with new cards is just use it to by a cup of coffee first before making a huge purchase --- just to make sure things are ok.

Did you have to say that? I drink coffee on average 6 times a year and now you've tempted me. Advertising is effective, sometimes.

When I worked retail, anytime a card was declined and it "looked new" I would always ask the customer if they had activated it yet... many times that would be the problem. Folks are just really busy now, and it's easy to forget... like Bone35 said, it happens to the best of us.
My personal experience with Capital One cards is that they are usually the least 'spooked' of all my cards. Actually, on the seldom occasion I have an issue with another card, it's my Capital One card that I reach for next, since I know it "just works". They are also the only issuer I have that doesn't need me to call them before I make international purchases online.

Isn't there a HUGE white sticker that says, "ACTIVATE ME!" on the credit card? The person lost $27 dollars in rewards. That's 11 grande cups of coffeeeeeee! Ahhhhhhh! This is the greatest horror halloween story of the week.
