I see... yeah, that is a payment float. The credit card company is the one who held your payment, not WF. They did it because the previous payment to that account bounced.

Actually WF is the credit card company...

If you are saying that WF is the issuing bank as well as the bank account where the funds were cashed, then it is the same thing. If a previous payment bounced they will "hold" the next payment for up to 14 days. I use to see it happen all the time with USAA accounts. It's a very standard practice, but has nothing to do with pushing a payment. The same issue would have happened had you written a paper check.

And no, lol, I didn't get my Capital One question answered. Smiley Sad

Re: Pushing Payments to CCs vs Pulling

Pulling without question. If you push and the Bank screws up the bill pay, the late fees etc fall on you; with pulling it's all on the receiving bank to make sure the payment processes by the date you specify (provided you have enough money in the payment account). No messing with manual setup of the PIF amount each month or risking short paying and thus getting hit with interest.

I pull pay everything... mortgage, CCs, other bills and have had no issues. So nice to have everything auto draft around 1st or 2nd of each month without even having to pay attention to it.

Re: Pushing Payments to CCs vs Pulling

Up until a few days ago, I always pulled my payments. The downside to pulling all the time is you have to wait for charges to post (for certain creditors) before making a payment. If it's near statement closing it could potentially be a BIG problem. I am now open to doing both.

Re: Pushing Payments to CCs vs Pulling

My pull odysee should be over after nearly a week now. What happened? I selected the wrong account on a small mobile device and once I realized it I  tried to stop this payment. (Pull from US Bank card to Discover Bank)  Not a chance neither me nor US Bank could intercept the fully automated process.  So on the side of Discover Bank they had to turn down as I was 100$ short to cover  that 2,5K payment. I immediately paid from the correct account and the CC bill was paid fine and showed 0 balance. I also immediately transferred funds to the account the payment was supposed to be pulled due to this error even way before the first attempt got turned down. Guess what.... the push payment showed for 4 days on my bank account but the funds did not become available even before the automated 2nd pull attempt came in. And being in Thailand there was no faster way to fund that account.  Therefore a 2nd declined payment .... 30$ each time from the bank account and 25$ each time from the credit card company and this totals to 110$ for a small error on a mobile app that the wrong account was taken...I definitely have too large fingers for these little mobile devices and I  will never use it again.  What  really is a nightmare that once you hit submit on these little things there is nothing that can be done to make it right and you have to watch for days how the ping pong takes its course. Discover was nice and credited the 2 x 30$ and US Bank has done 1 x 25$ and does not know yet that the 2nd attempt failed again.  Make sure you check 3 x if you have multiple accounts set up on mobile devices... I could have sworn that I had the BofA account on screen which was the 2nd line on the drop down menu and when I hit submit it took the account on line 1.  How embarrassing is this ?

Hey, it happens to the best of us... as lousy as it was, it sounds like you have come though it mostly unscathed.  Smiley Wink

I'm firmly "on the fence" in the whole pull vs. push discussion; I have many accounts set up for both, and I actively use a combination of both.  Your situation is an example of what can go wrong with a pull transaction, but there are situations when a pull transaction is the best choice nonetheless.  As has been discussed (ad nauseum) there are things that can go wrong with push transactions as well.

Don't be embarassed... especially on here.  I appreciate your willingness to tell us of your experience, and to follow-through with letting us know the outcome.  There's a lot of value in the data points from your experience - specifically, the confirmation that Discover re-submits the transaction a second time after it fails.

All that being said, I did my part by worrying about this for you; I hope you held up your end of the deal by enjoying the beach for me...  Smiley LOL

Thanks Uncle.  Small correction it was US Bank (Cash+)  that was the pulling account and they do automatically pull twice if not successful the first time. I believe there are other institutions  that automatically re-submit up to 3 x. So the odysee could have gone one more round. Discover was the bank that was nice to waive the double fees without me even asking.  Also US Bank has waived the first 25$ fee on their own without me even asking..not sure what they will do when they learn the 2nd attempt was also not successful Smiley Sad.  ... I guess a 25$ would be a fair deal for me for this whole mess. It was clearly my mistake.

What I am going to do now is only set up pull payments for minimum payments and push the rest from the bank side. So that combination should not create any trouble and certainly not use any mobile app for payments anymore.  I never had any issues in the past 30 years as I know my balances and here this never was intended to be pulled from Discover bank but the mobile app finally logged in the first account from the drop down instead of the 2nd account I meant to have selected and seen before submitting.

Re: Pushing Payments to CCs vs Pulling

late to the party but i just recently started researching pull/push payment. so here's my 2 cent.

after reading the whole thread, im leaning towards being open to using 'push' but just to offset slow-moving pending (large) charges. other than that, it's still gonna be mainly a 'pull' for me. much easier for me and you could actually peruse through your account/s and see if there were any changes like due/statement cycle dates, your CL if it increased or decreased, important msgs from the lender, (ab)normal charges, on top of the many other 'pull' reasons people have shared here.

note: after i make the payment, i then make a screenshot of the page. just so i have a backup if ever my lender say i didn't pay them. i make this a habit with all my bills. actually, with anything i do online - esp. sign up bonus page, slick deals, application forms, and other things i deem might come handy if i need to refer to it or provide it, hopefully never.  Smiley Very Happy

*i use "full page screen capture" google extension.
