To my knowledge, the United Mileage Plus (eventually rebranded as the United MP Explorer) card was offered in both the Visa Signature and World MC versions.  I'm not sure if the World MC is still an option for conversion but one could always ask.  A colleague of mine still had the World MC last I recall.

As I recall, your initial card is kept active for 60 days after you initiate a PC.
