Just got approved for a Capital One Quicksilver card with 3K limit. Now, I have a question about whether I should close some of my "rebuilder" cards or not, and the impact on my AAoA and overall average credit limits.
My Fico8 scores range from 600-621 currently, and I'm trying to get close to 700 in the next 3-6 months to buy a house. My current card lineup is:
Capital One Quicksilver - 3K (new account) $0 utilization Highest Limit
Capital One Platinum - secured card, $1,451 limit, oldest credit card at just over 3 years old. $0 utilization
Credit One Visa - $1,100 limit, $32 balance(1 1/2 years old)
Credit One MC - $500 limit, $0 utilization (4 months old)
Merrick Bank Visa - $850 limit, $0 utilization (2 years old)
Buckle Card - $250 limit, $0 utilization (6 months old) Lowest Limit
Express Card - $500 limit, $0 utilization (new account)
Overstock Card - $750 limit, $0 utilization (new account)
Should I close any of these accounts? The Credit One accounts suck, but one is over $1K limit and it's my second oldest CC account, so not sure. It would be nice to get rid of the secured card now that I don't need it anymore, but it's my oldest CC account and has a credit line of $1.5K. Maybe I should just leave things as is? I'm not applying for anything else for a while to let things age a bit.
You've got more than enough cards to build with. Closing cards does NOT affect your AAoA for FICO. It may for many of the FAKO scores, but not FICO. The only thing it affects negatively is your UTI% if you're carrying balances.
I would close the cards that have annual fees (or monthly fees), and secured accounts that won't graduate. Keep at least three to five bank cards.
Ok, I will close the secured card and maybe the cards with lower limits. By bank cards, do you mean credit cards and store cards?
Bank card - issued to you directly by your bank or credit union. Store cards are just as good scorewise, but their usage is limited.
Close both the Credit One cards. Immediately.
