I have personal experience w/ closing First Premier and it didn't affect my score.
Suze Orman advises to close one card a year. That way 10 years from now when they start to fall off you aren't hit so hard. But that's a very slow way to close crap cards. I see you say that Applied Bank is first to go - is that bc of the fees? Cuz my first premier was 59 a year and 7.00 a month.
Hi Booner, absolutely! Applied Card is a $15/mth maintenance fee! The First Premier needs to go too but because it's the oldest account on my history I am holding off on that one until last....and that's the only reason as I pay $6/mth on that and a $48 yearly fee. HHB cards both have a $50 yearly fee but no monthly maintenance. I hurt myself in this whole deal because after I got through my credit crisis, I should have nixed them all and began applying for new cards once my scores rose. But I was terrified of applying for anything at that time! Then a few years ago I bought my house so I couldn't really do anything during that process, then I got my car this year. So I am finally at a place where I am ready to work on this stuff. That $400 can be better spent elsewhere. I should have done this a long time ago.
Hip hip hooray!!! Applied card is now gone with the wind! I am so happy about that. The others will follow suit....My plan is on schedule thus far. I plan to nix one of the HHB cards with the lower limit once my Amex reaches the 6 month point.
I think with your new cards, I wouldn't worry about it very much, ditch the old cards they will still report for years and by then the new cards will have a long history (hopefully) I highly doubt closing the clunkers will make much of a dent, and by paying down your Citi balance, you'll get that back anyway.
I am waiting for my most recent Citi payment to post to my credit report. I am doing two payments to pay the balance down to $1500.00. I have already made the first payment and expect to see the results as of the first of Feb., hopefully with a fico increase. It's the only one with a balance. I will have it paid off completely by August. Gonna let the last $1500 ride from March until August (my 0% BT expires then) and pay roughly $250/mth until then. I do want to have some sort of balance on a card to show some overall use.
Well another one bites the dust.....Goodbye to another subprime! Next to go will be FP. It's not hurting me right now though since they waived the monthly fee. It will be leaving me on July 1st. My annual fee comes in August and I want to get rid of it at least 30 days in advance so I can avoid any problems. My other HSBC will say goodbye in August or Sept. I am just riding out my year on that one. I got my annual fee waived and credited in January so it's not hurting me either. Sockdrawer until execution!
Congrats!
Thanks webhopper!
Well I went ahead and threw caution to the wind. I closed the FP. We'll see what happens now. I will soon find out whether closing my oldest account will in fact reduce my score or if it is in fact true that closing it won't affect my AAOA.

Let us know what happens. It will be interesting if we discover through you that they've changed all the rules!
Oh hauling don't do that to me! I have already had one mini-panic attack today! LOL! Seriously though the one good thing I can say is this will be the very first year in almost 10 years that I haven't paid $6/mth just to carry a card or with the applied card $15/mth before I closed it (I had that 7 years). That doesn't even count the AFs! So regardless of whether my score drops I am saving a ton on money in the long run. I have gotta look at the bright side.
