Question on Discover's Reporting?

I have a question on Discover's reporting.

I just received a ScoreWatch alert because my Discover had a zero balance last month and now shows a $115 balance. (I've learned that letting a card show a small balance after showing a zero balance will prompt an alert...which is what I want. So, showing the balance was on purpose.)

That said, my question is on the reported amount. My Discover statement balance was $72. A subsequent charge after the statement date brought the balance to $115.

I thought the reported balance would be the statement balance...but that is not the case.

Anyone else had any experience with this?

(BTW, my FICO is +1, so no harm done in letting the small balance report...it's just that it was a bigger balance than I had intended.)

I experienced that.  I think Discover updates the account twice with the CRA's .  When a charge is made shortly after the statement cuts, its prompts them to update your balance again.  They are smart!

Re: Question on Discover's Reporting?

Discover is known to occasionally report mid-cycle for their own reasons. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. They actually reported 3 times in January on DW's account.

Other banks also report mid-cycle but it's fairly rare in general ...

Re: Question on Discover's Reporting?

Sorry about the previous blank post.... I just wanted to say that this
happened to me this week and I thought it was weird. I used my
card on Tuesday and it posted to my acct yesterday and my statement
closing date isn't until October 19th.

Forgive me if I sound stupid by asking this I always PIF so I don't
get charged interest. Can they charge me interest on the amount
that I charged ontuesday if my next statements closing date is after
the grace period? Does this question make since....

Re: Question on Discover's Reporting?

LynetteM, I've had various oddball reporting with Discover.  Some of it was due to CLI's (they report, apparently, after granting one).  No explanation for the others, though.  One month, they didn't report a balance when I did, in fact, have one.

I actually changed my statement date (at the suggestion of CWCID) to see if that rectifies the anomalies.  I don't have the results yet, but I guess I'll find out later this month.

Re: Question on Discover's Reporting?

This happened once to us, with Discover reporting on the 1st (usual time) and then again on the 20th or so. Since this was a December, and we had Christmas purchases on it, it was a pretty brisk figure.

I called to ask what was going on. They apologized, said they'd try to figure it out, reported again per request (as I'd paid off the balance), and it's never happened again. That was nearly two years ago.
