Questions About Adding AU to Discover

Good morning. As the weather is warming up, my SO & myself are preparing for an upcoming international trip. One of the last things on our list requires him to have a credit card in his name with a remaining balance of $3500 available, so I'm naturally looking to add him as an AU to my Discover card.

A little info: his credit score is rather poor at the moment. He has about 9 months of on-time payments on a seven year old auto loan before it was paid off & closed (transferred to another loan under ex's name), but no other credit reporting. There is currently one baddy reporting on TU & EQ. And we recently found something small on EX that will be disputed. I don't have a real credit score for him - CK's FAKO score estimates between high 500s & low 600s. Not enough to qualify for anything but a small secured credit card, by any means.

So my question is if I add him as an authorized user only - not a joint user, which Discover told me they don't allow anymore anyway - can his current credit score or history negatively affect me? We are working toward resolving the baddies on his credit report, but I want to ensure they won't come back and harm my credit in our efforts.

Re: Questions About Adding AU to Discover

No, an AU can only affect your credit if they make purchases and leave you on the hook to pay. There are no other impacts.

There wouldn't be any negative from him to your report, but whatevery is on your Discover will show up on his.

Zero effect on you other than having normal utilization impact based off of what you keep reporting on Discover.  It reporting to his could only help his credit

Nope your good as long as he doesn't go wild and max it out. You're actually helping his profile which is a good thing. Hope you have a great trip!!

Re: Questions About Adding AU to Discover

Great to hear.

Thanks for the prompt response, guys. Other than my util sitting a tad high (~40%) from recent trip-related expenses that will be paid down, my record with Discover is clean. Our financial plan after we get back is to really crunch down and get things paid off (auto & a small personal loan) so we can start saving for a house.

I appreciate the help. Smiley Happy
