Random automated Citi card closure.

Recently got an email about my Forward card being closed. Called in and turns out that if you dont use it for 25 months they automatically close it.

So I chatted in, and they assured me I could call an account specialist and get it sorted. Well, guess thats not the case as they claim it cant possibly be undone. Only that you can request it be "reopened" and that will require a hard pull. I didnt ask if it would show up as a brand new Tradeline.

Its really very irritating, I was emailed with some generic "account closure" email which claimed I had a document about it waiting online. I did not.

Then, when I saw that there was no document I figured it was errant or a scam email so while I was logged in I said let me check if  I can get a soft CLI. the system allowed it and gave me a $1400 increase immediately. Very odd considering its slated to be "closed".

So what is the deal with Citi? Can the account be saved? Can the executive office do anything? I feel like ive been blindsided here, especially since the account did help my AAoA and Util.... I give my Citi business card lots of usage so its not like im not profitable for the company. Ive been with Citi since the day I turned 18 in 2010, come on Citi...

Re: Random automated Citi card closure.

Many credit card companies will close, restrict or reduce credit lines of accounts that become inactive. After 12+ months of non use there is a very good chance they will shut you down; for fraud protection and/or to save them money.

I do not have any experience with Citibank and reopening a card that was closed by them, but I do not know that most banks will not reopen an account once it has been closed. I would be surprised if they did reopen it as is because it is a card not offered anymore and it runs on the Visa network which Citibank is systematically getting rid of on non co branded cards.

As far as AAoA, Citibank will continue to report that card for up to ten years from date closed. Your utlity may be impacted but you should be able to raise limits on other cards to make up for it.

I certainly would not waste a HP for a decontended Forward card that I didn't use for 25 months. At 26-27 you are young enough to move on to bigger and better cards.

Not using a card for over 2 years is reasonable grounds for a creditor to close a card on you. If you have a card that you want to keep in the mix for whatever reason, id recommend putting a charge on it at least every 6 months. Just my average 2 penniesSmiley Wink

Re: Random automated Citi card closure.

I realize it's fair that they shut down the card, just seems kind of strange that they can't do anything about it when I KNOW the possibility exist. I work with databases at work and have done many things for customers (when absolutely needed) that our own customer service claims can't be done.

It's true that I can make it up with other cards, in fact my second discover card just gave me an auto CLI of $1600 that's not even reported yet. Was just really hoping someone had experience with this.

Kind of sucks that it's a card I opened in 2013 but at least it's not my 2010 Citi diamond preferred.

Oh well, lesson learned. Gotta go through the safe now and put something on every card.
