So... I started on my credit card cleanup so I was wondering if what I'm talking about is even a possibility. Back when I was in college, I opened by first card with my mom... Chase Slate. Since I had no history at all, my mom had to open the card in her name and add me as an authorized user I believe? They took care of the card till I graduated, after graduation I got my own alumni card that was easier to attain and started building credit with it. I stopped using the chase card, paid down whatever I had and it's just been sitting unused for couple of years now. (don't think I even have an un-expired version of it anymore lol) Now, last week I applied for CapOne QS and Citi DC... approved for both 10k/3k limits...
I've spoken to my mom multiple times about the old card, it's not particularly useful. $1.5k limit on it, basically makes it useless and no rewards that I'm aware of BUT it does show up on my credit history so it's nice to have to increase my avg acct age since it's by far my oldest card... So what we wanted to do was remove her from the accound as she just doesn't care about having it (I believe she's listed as the main person on it) and move me from authorized user (if I am) so I can take care of it and manage it. (maybe upgrade it to some other card through Chase)
I'm still confused about all of this so I was wondering:
1) Is this even possible?
2) If it is, will it result in a HP for me? I just had 2 last week, and I don't wanna deal with another HP if I don't have to
3) If it's possible and I won't need a HP, how would the upgrade process go? Will I need to do a HP for that or can I ask them to convert without? I have extensive/good checking history with Chase so I don't know if that will have any impact on it?
Thanks for your help!

It is not possible what you are wanting to do. I had the same question a while ago haha. It is her card, she is the onwer of it she applied for it. You can't just keep all that history and somehow move it to your name. If you want it to keep helping you, stay as the AU, if you do not want it anymore she can close the account but you can't just slide in and take over. She applied for it, its hers. Good try thought, I wanted to do the same thing haha
I don't think that's possible. You would have to app for the card yourself I think. Unless there was some way they would allow your mom to add you as a joint card holder (not an AU), but I'm not even sure if that's possible, and even if it was, I'm sure they would want to HP you. I don't know, I'm just guessing here.
welp that's unfortunate... guess I'll just go and ask Chase to get me an up-to-date card and buy myself a slurpee with it once a year...
is it gonna prevent me from having another Chase card in the future if I ever decide that I want some other one from them?

Absolutely not. I was an AU on 2 of my mom's Chase cards years back (still show on my reports as closed) and I had no problem getting a card of my own with them. Just keep in mind their 5/24 rule (I don't believe AU accounts count, but I could be wrong).
Just close it and it will continue to report as a positive account for 10 years.

This is my suggestion as well. Also on the 5/24 rules, if my reading is correct that does not count in regards to AU accounts.

my worry about that is it's by far my oldest card... If I close it, I'll go from card in 2008, 2011 and 0 brand new cards, to just having one card from 2011 and 2 brand new ones... won't that REALLY hurt my avg account age? I don't have an extensive credit history...
This is possible actually, though it might depend on the bank....and I don't have any exp with chase. The process is long and will require at least one Hp, you'll have to make yourself a co-owner which will require a credit check and it will require both of you to be present either over the phone or in a branch to sign off, and once that's completed they should have a form to "change responsibility" which may or may not require another Hp depending on how far apart the two are done, I'm also not sure how the account will then reflect in your credit history....it may show you as an Au up until you're made an owner and so on.....but with most banks this can be done its just a lot of effort and only needed in special circumstances.

yea that's sort of what I was thinking.. and based on responses that I got and what I was expecting off the bat, it seems like even if this is somehow even possible, it might not be worth the trouble to go through everything that's required... I'll just buy a coffee every year with that old card plus all in all, that's still an extra $1.5k util space for my mom... seems like a lot of work for no real benefit, even if at all possible...
