Reported payment after charge off?

I had a credit card that was closed in December of 2001.  I never made a payment in December of 04 so why is this showing up on my report as such?  This credit card was from my college days of 400 scores and now I have climbed up to the mid 600's range for all three CRA's.  Does anyone have any advice on what to do?

If you haven't had any activity on that card since 01 I would definitely disoute it.  With a date of last activity showing 04 it adds three years to the time it will appear on your credit files.  Does it show a balance due?  Was it charged off or turned over to collections?

Re: Reported payment after charge off?

The balance due shown is zero.  It was charged off, something I'm not proud of.  I now have a JBD company calling me demanding I pay up.  I want to do the right thing, but don't want to hurt my score in the process.  I hear alot about the PIF or GW letters, but at this point do I send it to the OC or to the JBD?  I never made any payment in December of 2004...but how would you dispute that and where could it get me??

THanks!!

Re: Reported payment after charge off?

The CA must send you a letter giving you 30 days to dispute the validity of this debt..
(CA means Collection Agent)
It is illegal but many CA's will re age the accnt to try & slip by the 7 yr deletion requirement, again this is against the law!
If you make the mistake of aknowledging this debt as yours or worse making a payment ,it could start the cycle all over leaving you on the legal hook for it Smiley Mad
This happened to me in court & cost me 2 K in garnishment.
My advice would be to send a letter to the CA  bothering you stating this debt isn't valid.
They are required to stop reporting this to an CRB's(Experian,Transuinion or Equifax) while they investigate this .
Any CRB's have 30 days to make sure of the vaildity of this debt or it MUST be deleted .
It's quite rare but sometimes this doesn't happen Smiley Sad
Next step is to inform them of this mistake & that they are facing a lawsuit now, this will get their attention & action taken Smiley Happy
It's unfortunate but sometimes lawyers must get involved .
Your letter of dispute should take care of this matter though .
