Re: Risks with multi cards same creditor?

I personally don't see why people would only want to work with one lender. I'm happy with my setup at the moment (and I am considering getting one more card from AmEx, Citi, and Barclays each), but I would never go and close all of my other accounts to just have an account with Citi or Amex, for example. If the relationship with that lender goes downhill, you're totally screwed with no real options. At least with having 5 different lenders like I do, the likelihood of all of them shutting me down is fairly small.

Re: Risks with multi cards same creditor?

Great posts explaining the risks of one lendor. It is also good to have access to the Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express networks. As we all know, situations arise where banks loose their networks for days. Like having your accounts closed you can be left in a tight spot if the bank is off line for a period of time. There is an old Boy Scout Motto: "always be prepared." One of my banks (large bank) lost their network for 2.5 days and what a panic that could have been except, I have other banks and used them.

Wanderer, Great point!

System failure I am a frequent traveler and have had problems in the past with my Paypal debit card purchases overseas. Just two months ago I couldnt even make a $20 purchase at a local gas station. Definately a key reason to be cautious about.

Which network has had its network go down for days? Before my app spree this summer, I only had Visas, and I've never experienced an issue using it. And I used it exclusively (carried no cash) for around 7 years.

I think sunrise is talking about myfico people with lots of credit with GE, not people who post a lot on this board, if that is what you meant.

people with GE credit solutions phone number on speed dial, and call it when ever they are bored...

it's rare, but such situations can always happen.

most of the time if there's any downtime, it's usually for a couple hours and isolated to one bank. But if you were stuck with the same bank and they're having maintenance, then you're pretty much screwed until they're done as well.

Re: Risks with multi cards same creditor?

Thank you everyone.

Based on your positive and encouraging feedback while on my way into the Garden last night I decided to give Discover it and Slate Chase a pull.

Discover approved me for $10K

So 4 for 4 for me.  If Slate Chase is playing hardball i'm ready to let her go too.
